Have wanted to do this for a long time, glad I did cause I love the almost stone washed finish the blade has  Will take some more pics later after my camera recharges.

I dig it. Thats a good looking knife. Did you chemically strip it? I removed the teflon on a Recon 1 tanto, but did it with emory cloth and it altered the underlying finish. Still good stuff though.

I took a dull knife and gently scraped away the coating, it didn't harm or alter the underlying finish at all.

Fellas I know Cold Steel has a questionable reputation on this forum, and the goofy mall ninja videos don't help...BUT honestly I love this knife!!!!

Looks great!

I personally find coatings unnecessary unless the knives are high carbon steel where the coat is used to protect. The rest of the coated knives in SS seem to be coated only to appeal to the Tacticool/Mall Ninja crowd, and coatings end up looking like crap when used.

Cold Steel should really offer a satin finish for this model and the American Lawman.

so glad you posted this, just got my Ak-47 saturday and I was thinking about doing the same thing and maybe sanding down the G 10 a little so it's not like sandpaper against my pockets. Any small parts I have to worry about losing when I take the knife apart? For those of you asking about the chemical strip, what would be good to use? I don't think I could do near as good a job with a dull knife.

You did a great job. Did you disassemble the knife first or just leave it together?

Cool pics. I did the same thing to my Recon 1 recently and really liked how it turned out. Been very pleased with the knife overall.

Did you use something like a butter knife? I mean the kind you would see at the dinner table? I have tried sanding but didn't get the great result you did. I was thinking of using steel wool but you did great.

I used a $10 butterfly knife that I bought last week while on vacation in Myrtle Beach SC lol. I was bored one day so I bought it to flip and ended up scraping all the coating off my AK with it that night while watching tv, it only took me about an hour to do it:) The knife was pretty dull but it had a nice point that I used to work around the thumb plate and the handle. Honestly the coating comes off so easy you could use a nickle to scratch it away...just be careful:cool: My AK still has a decent working edge on it but if yours is new out of the box I would take extra care when working around the edge.

I taped my edge. You did a great job for not taking it apart. You need to do the back aluminum alloy piece now to really make her 100%. You have to use sandpaper or stripper - I used sandpaper & a bit of light scraping since it's soft and easy to cut into (it was worth it). Looking good man!

Any blade play? I got a smidge horizontal from removing the tight tolerances built into the coating. I'd have had to shorten the screws to get it out since the were tight & bottomed out. I bought some washers from Knife Kits and that got rid of it.

Thanks, no blade play so far though, I think it may be due to the fact that there is still coating on the blade underneath the scales where I didn't take the knife apart.
