Stripped Navy MKI....anyone done it yet?

No offense taken. Usually though when someone says to me "Did you google it" I say "Of Course! We SHOULD just stop talking to each other!"

Plus I'm secretly trying to start a Navy MKI cult here....tricky, since it's not a Becker. It will obviously be abolished where the you-know-whats arrive...

Phew, I'm glad I haven't made an enemy for life here :D.

Also, I bet if you started a MK1 owners thread/group or something like that in the KaBar forum it could go over quite well. Because yea, as soon as the you-know-whats arrive here in beckerland it will pretty much pandemonium over here and the MK1 might get lost in the exictement.

Oh, and thanks for the detail CCMI, that was great. And about the black parts right outside of the leather, that I know is some sort of rubber/plastic washer, so I'm not surprised that the stripper didn't make the black part of it come off (Think toooj mentioned it somewhere in his ask toooj thread:)).

And maybe I'll end up picking up one of these to use for a while before I gift it to my friend. You know, to um... test it out for him :).

Ok, so I made time :D

oooooooo this looks NICE!!!! Good job man. the grey steel and brown leather make a really nice looking combo.

It's stripped. Gotta work on the cross guard and give it the wet/dry treatment. Will post up pics tonight. I like it MUCH better!

Sweet man, I'm excited to see it. Did you polish it or did you leave it like the one above?

I actually started a Ka-Bar 1217 questions thread in the Ka-Bar forum with that as one of the questions. Toooj said it used to be a type of rubberized plasticky stuff in WWII, and as that material has gotten harder to find, they switched over to black plastic. What type of plastic is anyone's guess. Looks like Delrin to me.

Thanks for the info guys.

It's impervious to nasty chemical strippers, that's all I know.

Still polishing, pics tommorrow. Outdoor light is always better. Still trying to get the guard good. Thats the hard part. Pommell and blade came out nice, and going to continue shining up the blade as much as I can. Love this knife!

ooh, shiny rust magnet :>

Both my BK2 and BK9 are the same way and they don't rust..... Oh yeah! Because I take care of them!

In a way.... Having knives all covered in black coatings is like having a scoped rifle that you never learn to shoot with the iron sights. Learn to d do without, like people did before all the technological crutches were invented.

Done with Jasco Paint and Epoxy Stripper, 1200 and 1500 grit wet/dry sandpaper, and some elbow grease

that looks so wicked.
Kabar should make one in 154CM with a bead blasted finish and be done with it.

That's a fine looking knife. Why, oh why are you trying to get me to spend more money, Tanner? My Becker habit is already breaking me. I can't afford to start delving into Ka-bars, too. :o

alright now i gotta talk my mk1 outta her panties..hope its easier than it was talkin my ol lady outta hers

I looks beautiful with that contrast between the blade and the black kraton. I think it even rivals how the leather ones look personally.

Did you get the grind marks off when you sanded it, or were you just going for a light polish? Just asking because i've stripped two blades by hand and have tried to get the grind marks by hand as well... and it takes freaking forever. However I have noticed that even if all of the grind marks aren't gone that it still brings out some shine if you head straight for the higher grits.

Not sure what you mean by "Grind Marks". I get it started with 1000 grit, then 1200, then finish with 1500. Just sit and lightly polish while watching TV.

On the two blades I've stripped by hand, there were some pretty obvious "grind marks" from where the flat grind was ground at the factory. They're vertical along the side of the blade, and of course don't make any difference to the performance. Some people try to get them off, others don't mind.

And again, the MK1 looks great. I think this is starting to sway me towards getting my buddy one of these over the Bushlore. Thanks again for the great thread man :D.

I'd take this any day of the week and twice on Sunday over a Condor knife. It's a perfect bushcraft knife IMO. Very slicey, Awesome grip, awesome steel, perfect size. I know some people like the look of leather, but the kraton model grip in unparalled.
