Hey all. I have an EDC that I love, my Benchmade Mel Pardue 530SBK, and this serves me well being a teacher living in a city. But sometimes I have work projects that require something I can beat on, pry (lightly) with, really abuse the edge (and then resharpen) and carry around. I normally carry a fixed blade knife for things like this, but I would like something less aggressive looking and bulky for going to my sister's house for a work-day and not having her nice suburban friends think I am nuts with my becker or whatever, just something more discrete that I can still carry on me when I stop by the store on my way to do something my Mel Pardue can't really handle. I would LOVE to get a Chris Reeve, but I can't justify the price...I think I would want to baby it too much (perhaps sadly) and just would rather not spend that much money on something I won't carry much (the main reason); as I said I won't use it much- what do you suggest?

Swiss army knife, Mercator K55, pliers based multi-tool, CRKT folding Razel, Cold Steel triad folder, coutycomm widgy bar or EOD breacher bar, various mini prybars from the hardware store

^^^ Lots of good suggestions here, including the things I was planning to recommend: a Cold Steel folder (American Lawman, Recon 1, or AK-47), plus a CountyComm prybar/mini prybar (some of which are small enough to fit on a keychain).

Sak. Makes a great backup beater with actual tools, plus its about as nonthreatening as possible. Leatherman tools are also great, but they are bulkier, so they stay home more often for me.

Buck Vantage in general is a good choice for that purpose - agree with Shawn B.
I carry mine for a couple of months now. The steel is not a super, but it is very easy to sharpen. And thick bevel makes it quite resistant to moderate obuse.
And it is cheap too - so no reason for babying it.

The spyderco manix2 is a pretty stout knife, well built and a great value in the $80 range, will the size and looks be good for you?

I just purchased an American Lawman and I would trust it over most, I find it comfortable lightweight and strong as hell. I agree the G10 used is a bit harsh but nothing some fine(600/800 grit) sandpaper can`t fix in under 5 minutes then strip the blade to get rid of that black crap they call a finish on the blade and you have a great knife.

cant go wrong with a spyderco endura 4, VG10 doesnt chip much, easy to sharpen, strong, just make sure to get a sabre grind model

The Spyderco Manix 2 and Kershaw RAM are very tough and cheap. I'd recommend the Manix 2 especially; it has excellent grip, steel, and locking. If you can go slightly over 100 the ZT 0200 is unbeatable for toughness around this price (try GP knives for a good price).

If you don't have a Buck 110, get one! They are a bit more dear at Wally World now, but you can still get one, with sales tax, and have enough left from $30 for a bottle/can of pop. Great slicer - stout blade spine, strong lockback, too. The brass bolsters will grow character, if you use it around salt spray. 420HC takes/keeps a decent edge, too. They come with a sheath - nylon or leather, depending on the source - but they are a 'pocketable' knife. If you like the basic model, made in the USA (Except for the sheath!), check out Buck's Custom Knife Shop - on their site. You can have one made to your desires - one in S30V with nickel silver bolsters will run <$90 delivered. Great QC, too.

i would say rat-1, tenacious, endura, kabar dozier, a lone wolf knife...but what i would really recommend (all of you will think i'm nuts:D) is the Enlan EL-01!!

If you're not going to carry it all that much and want something to pry with a strong tip you can't go wrong with this one!
It's the biggest one i own:D
It has a 8cr13mov blade wicked sharp with a very strong linerlock that gives the knife a rock-solid lockup.
It feels great in the hand, like a tank i would say, and the fipper gives you hours of fun, trust me:D
If you don't want to buy a chinese knife then this one is not for you but if you don't have that kind of problem don't give it a second thought and BUY IT NOW!!
The best thing about it is that you can get it for 15$ shipped!!!

You'll thank me later:D

I think there were many great suggestions. But anything from Cold Steel will serve you well. The Mini AK-47 is my favorite. But the whole lineup would be a great choice. The AUS-8 is a breeze to sharpen.

If you want a Spyderco offering. The Manix 2 would fit the bill tough folder great steel 154 cm. And excellent ergos. The Paramilitary 2 is also excellent and it comes with a full flat ground blade, but I think you would be better served with a softer steel like 154cm than an S30v.
