Yes i know, knives are mean to cut, only....but in case somebody needs to open his way through an broken elevator door or is trapped inside a fallen cabin in the woods...wich folder would make it through? Strider? AlMar SERE? Sebenza? ZT? Emerson?

Having had all of the above, I'd say none of the above. The only folder I've seen that could do it is an Extrema Ratio Fulcrum. Doesn't cut though any material real well, but man, is it overbuilt and made for prying.

I think pry bar power would go to strider, emerson, and ZT. They got some thick blades that can take a beating.

Folding satellite phone! Call for help :D
Sorry, couldn't help it.

I think Sebenzas are really strong. Maybe a bit underrated in the strength department. I've never heard of one failing.

For prying and stuff though I guess the bigger, heavier, thicker bladed knives will do better. However, the whole rest of the time of your life when you aren't busting out of a broken elevator you won't get the slicing joy of a slipjoint or a Spyderco Caly 3.

For the pocket space and weight that some of those overbuilt folders take up, I would really recommend a small fixed blade like a Busse Game Warden, those things are sometimes made with some THICK steel. Rat Cutlery makes an Izula which looks extremely carryable, the RC-3 should also be checked. They have a great reputation for toughness and good warranty.

broken elevator door

youre going to be waiting for the jaws of life or fireman's axe. the last elevator I was in had two layer steel doors at least 2" thick. Im not sure a battle mistress would be able to get you out of that.

anyway, the extrema ratio folders look VERY strong, but I cant speak to them since Ive never even gotten to handle one (though I would love to).

I think the XM18 Rick Hinderer would be one of the best if not the best! Kevin

I think Extrema Ratio folders will survive the situation aforementioned. Very overbuilt, but doesn't cut well. I have the Extrema Nemesis, and none of my folders (Striders, Sebenzas, ZT, Emersons) compare with the lock on the Nemesis.

Only one problem, many of the ER's have rather small pivot pins, it may not make a bit of strenght difference but it looks like it could to me. (compared to strider, hinder, Emerson)

Crusader Forge has to be the maddest and strongest folders from the ones I have seen. It should cut the Extrema Ratio or Striders in half without sweat. :D

Ain't no knife going to cut another in half. Not until somebody comes up with a "light saber".

I agree with slimshaneee on both those comments.

  • To get something that would serve as a prybar for the 10 billion to one chance that a knife is all you have with which to pry, you give up a knife that is actually useful for daily use for cutting things.
  • A small fixed blade will outperform a chunky folder when it comes to prying. For that matter, so will a small prybar or cold chisel. I carry a cold chisel in my toolkit.
