Strongest folding knife !

The last thing the world needs is another ugly folder with a thick blade.
Innovation & invention is a good thing, & you'll never know how good your design is until you start using it.
Put a more comfortable handle on it, & a long chopping blade. If it survives testing, good.

I imagine this design would be heavy. Try making itlighter. Use an aluminum handle or FRN or Heck; even G-10 .
Light ; comfortable ; but well balanced.

We are in south Fla. Bought Elmax from Alpha knife supply. I designed them , water-jet blanks, sent to Montana for grind and HT, Richter precision DLC. Hand made carbon slabs myself. The FFK was made by a company that used their interpretation of an FFK and my CAD files. My vision for the FFK is 440C or 420V blade and handle steel, 420V bolsters, FRN handles. Price point $99. That is the goal.

Still dont see that proper membership level. Based on your track record I could assume you have lied about getting one, but I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you got one but are so crass that you cannot even wait for it to kick in before promoting your contraption.

SIR ! ...........I did in fact buy a gold membership. I have emailed support on where to change membership level in my settings.

The CAD here helps me make more sense of it, thanks.

Just a heads up, you need to go into your account settings and actually switch to the Gold membership, otherwise you'll still show up as just a registered user.

Here.

I think I posted how you should do this, but I'll do it again... Go to your account. Go to Settings. In the sidebar on the left, there is a link you'll see called "Permissions Groups" click on it. Now you have two choices, Registered User and Gold (if that's the membership you bought.) Click the button to "Identify me as a member of this group." Click the button at the bottom to save the changes or whatever.

Yep, it seems I did, LEGION-12 put pasted what I wrote... wasn't in as much detail but I think I still gave you enough to go for it... anyways now you know for sure.

Mike,
Why would you want to use a martensitic steel for bolsters? The don't need to hold an edge.

Laurence,
The partial left bolster and the full right bolster bolster support the handle tang legs. So because of needed tensile strength.... 400 series stainless
or grade 5, Ti-6Al-4V or Ti 6-4. That said I believe stainless right bolster insert covered in FRN (Glock) that continues back as the right handle slab would work.

Ok..... I prefer fixed blade knives to folders, but a 9 or 10 inch fixed blade knife is not realistic to carry for most people. The FFK is my solution to carry a capable fixed blade in the same space typically reserved for a large folder.
Attached are pics of 2 designs I made. Hunter and Tactical fixed blades Elmax, HT and Cryoed to 61RC. Carbon slabs.
DLC from Richter precision. View attachment 444271

As you mentioned you purchased ELMAX, I think that would be a much more attractive steel on your folder-fixed blade.

A lot of users on this forum and elsewhere (myself included) have been really impressed with its performance all-around. I like it much like I like CPM-154 @ 61+, as I think it is a great steel for general usage. While I cannot speak to how well it performs on fixed blades, it does great on folders and can get the crap beaten out of it, including withstanding usage that is technically abuse more than usage.

One enemy you are working against is going to be weight. Many large folders that have attempted to supplement fixed blades have used clips that smaller knives have. And while these clip designs work well on most knives, they do not work well on these large folders. The knife does not stay stable, it sometimes twists around in the pocket, it puts too much pressure on slacks, etc. Are you considering a pocket clip (or other primary carry method) that may differ from conventional designs?

One more thing comes to mind: the sheath. If you can design a belt sheath that can holster the knife when folded, but ALSO holster the knife when locked open, so someone can belt carry as a fixed blade or as a folder with the same sheath, that is a huge convenience. You would probably need to utilize both kydex and leather, but this is doable.

Large folders are best carried in ballistic nylon sheath....either clip on waist or belt type. As far as materials for knife all simulations have been done with 440C. It's easy to find and has good tensile/compression and shear strength. Surprisingly the FFK is not that heavy. Elmax is my personal favorite but it is expensive.

Mike,
I use 440C at a RC of 58-60 depending for my knives quite often, but for a small piece like you would use in your folder its not really going to be very much more money to use Elmax or any of the crop of super steels.

You certainly are big on pulling "facts" out of the air, aren't you? How about some justification for this most-recent claim? Will putting them in a leather sheath or in your pocket cause them to explode or their locks to fail when you use them to pry or something like that?

I carry a Buck 110 in a leather sheath and I have a large Schrade folder (about the same size, maybe a tad longer) in my pocket now. So far I am okay... I'll let you know as the day goes on.

Not in a ballistic nylon sheath?!? It's your funeral. :D
