strongest, toughest knife under 100 bucks

Is it horizontal or vertical play? Have you put loc tite or teflon tape on the pivot screws? Just curious. I have put my S90V Manix 2 through a heck of a lot harder use than whittling and it locks up the same as new. The pivot did loosen up at one point but teflon tape has kept it right where I put it. It is one of my most frequent EDC and hasn't been babied and I have complete faith in it.

It's side to side. Where do I put the Teflon tape to take out the play? If you could tell me how to fix it I'd be happy, it's still my favorite edc knife. I'll like it even more if it doesn't have play.

It's because I used it to whittle a little on some pine and the blade loosened up enough to have about 2 mm of play when opened and closed. I tightened the pivot as tight as I could do it and it still wiggles. It's a great knife and I still carry it, but a hard user it isn't.

Yep, after a couple of sessions of cutting drills on the cutting dummy, mine developed some side to side play that wasn't there before. I tightened up the pivots all the way and used blue loctite. The play is still there.

Hi guys i have been inactive for a while on the forums but i have come back with a whole new question. For under 100 dollars what is the strongest knife. I mean overall construction. My vote goes for the schrade schf1. it seems like a very sturdy knife and i have the clip point version coming in the mail. What are your guys opinions?

i dont know if its the hollow handle or the weight but id have to pass on this choice, though it seems for its type its good value for what you paid for it, around $50. sorry if you paid more you got boned. for this blade size and shape the kbar`s, beckers and rats would probubly hold up better , be lighter carry weight and be more comfortable in the hand.

CrimsonTideShooter, singularity35 have you guys contacted spyderco customer service? they like to know when their products fail so they can find out why, they also do warranty repair.

Mine hasn't failed. It just developed some blade play. Also, it costs me about 20 dollars to ship there one way. So, my manix 2 is just relegated to medium and light tasks.

I put a couple wraps on each pivot screw, one on each side. You have to trim the tape a little as it is too wide for the screw. Then tighten down each screw and see if it took out the play. If it has horizontal play it is the pivot bushing not the lock. There is a bushing that the blade rotates around and on a small number of knives the bushing can be a hair to wide so that no matter how tight you get the screws there can be a small amount of horizontal play. A small amount doesn't hurt anything and is annoying more than anything. Since it is the bushing the lockup and strength shouldn't be a concern.

If there is still play Spyderco might be able to take care of it. It can be fixed if you are handy but the knife is a little harder to take apart than most knives and it voids the warranty (although it doesn't say that in the paperwork which makes me mad but that's another subject). There is a shoulder on the bushing that can be sanded down a little which allows the washers and liners to tighten up a little more than previously which allows the space between liners to decrease and take out the play.
