Stropping leather thoughts?

I know times have changed and there are better leather treatment products now, but my father, uncles and all that generation always applied lard to there new boots before wearing them, but they were short of money and used whatever they could. I have a pair of workboots that i have had for 20 years. Only lasted that long because i have always looked after the leather.
