I pounded the tang into the handle without epoxy and now I can't seem to get it off. I tugged on it hard and it didn't budge. Any suggestions?

hand grenade :D

sometimes I just crack myself up. :D

OK pull harder or get a bigger hammer.

Howdy, can you post a pic so we better understand your need?
Sounds like you may have rivited the handle on inadvertantly. may have to do what bruce says and get a bigger hammer... sacrifice this handle this time but just think, you can make a better handle for it then and tell folks you made the handle!

slip the blade in between vise jaws that are open just enough for the blade and tap the handle on the jaws until it comes off.

Wrap the blade in a rag or piece of scrap leather. Clamp the protected blade in a vise and pull on the handle (brace bench with your foot as required :D )

If that still doesn't work, get a piece of 2"x2"x12" wood (or an appropriate size for your knife). Cut a slot in one end of the 2x2 length wise about 3" deep and as wide as the blade is thick. Clamp the protected blade near the tip end in a vise. Slide the slot in the wood over the blade close to the ricasso and hold the loose end of the wood in one hand while hitting the wood close to the ricasso with a hammer.

I'm contemplating just leaving it stuck without epoxy. I think it would be plenty strong for average use seeing how I can't even get it off pulling on it as hard as I can. Mind you, this isn't going to be sold... it's only my 4th knife. I would break the handle off but, I really like the wood I used and like I said, it seems strong. What do you think? Maybe I'll just put a pin or two through it.

Yes, it might be strong enough, but not sealed from water. I would go ahead and get that thang off there if I were you. Start off doing the stuff right, that you can get right. Thats what I try to do!

It will come loose i promise. I did the same thing with a hammer i made and i had to use a 20 ton press to get it on and i maxed out the press. I told my self ya right it will come off. after a little forging i looked and the head was almost off the handle. now a hammer does take a lot more of a beating then a knife but wood will swell and shrink and it will come loose. it's worth it to try harder and get it off. with out seeing a picture i cant give any advice on how to do that.

Could I get away with just putting pins in it?

Dustin,
Put it in the freezer to get it cold for a couple hours. Take it out and do the trick 69knives mentioned. Open the vise jaws about 1/4" and thunk the knife down ,letting the ricasso end of the handle strike the jaws. The inertia of the blade will make it come loose. It may take ten of twenty thunks, but it works.Be careful, since the blade may pop right out and fall on the floor.
I remove file handles this way.

So let me get this straight.. I grab the handle and stab down into the vise and it's supposed to come loose?

Run down to the hardware store and get some handle expansion fluid.

You also may find some steel shrinkers at the local industrial supply shop.:D

Good luck,

Mike L.

OK, plan B

Lock the blade in a vise ( pad the jaws with leather) ,leaving about 1/2" of blade exposed before the handle. Take a piece of 2X12X 1/4" mild steel and cut a long "V" in it.
Slip the "V" over the blade and lift the handle with the steel ( sort of like a pry bar). If that don't get it off, smash the handle with a hammer , and make a new one.
Stacy

Take off your shoe and hold the blade tip down over your bare foot. Then say, "I sure hope this handle doesn't come off." Murphy will do the rest. :D

Lol, good point Edro. Thanks for plan B, Stacy. I tried some more tugging while the blade was clamped in the vise today but, to no avail. I also fu@*&d up and stabbed the vise while slamming the front of the handle on the almost closed jaws of the vise and slightly damaged the tip so I had to carefully re-grind that...
Tomorrow I will try the pry bar method, Stacy and like you said, if that don't work, it'll be time to get angry with a hammer. Thanks everyone for the suggestions and help.

I guess I should have been more clear, I meant while holding the blade, slide it up and down to make the handle hit the vise jaws.

I don't know how big the blade is, I guess I think in terms of blades that I've made and none have been under 6.5" so they're easy to grab and do that with.

Stacy has a good idea, but maybe clamp the blade in the vise so there's just enough room to fit a crescent wrench between the handle and the jaws and pry. :)
