Gus,

Since I just ordered a fixed fighter, I'd like to know what others think is a good buy in this particular market.

Here are a few more categories you might want to consider:

ethnic (reproductions)
miniatures
fantasy

Good ones Tom, I added them.

(amazing when John and I were doing this, I left out two of my favorites Autos and Daggers had to go back and add them in so maybe I can be impartial

Thanks Carver (and again Tom) Great suggestions (my good friend Blues might just shoot me for leaving out neck knives

I think maybe the Obsidian and Flint can be combined with Primitive and then add a catagory for Period styles like Revolutionary/Civil War/Frontier styles.

In addition to style, you might consider materials/embellishments as an area since you have two already: Engraving and Filework.

How about stag handled, wood handled, manmade material handle, blade etching, handle carving? ...for starters. You might have 2 months of styles and 1 month materials/embellishments. The style will allow a wide variety of knifemakers while the other would showcase a particular craft/material. Then one knife might show up for different reasons and we could appreciate it all over again in yet another way. Just a thought.

Keep 'em coming folks this is great. I will update when I get home tonight.

Glad everyone is thinking "out of their box on this".

Thanks for taking the time to help out.

Fillet knives? (There's got to be some fishermen in here!)

The Embellishments category might include subgroupings, such as the already mentioned engraving and filework, as well as scrimshaw, carving, and inlays.

The categories can fall into two distinct groups:

Styles
Bowies
Hunters
Fighters
Etc...

Themes
Damascus Patterns
Period/Ethnic knives
Fantasy
Engraving and Scrimshaw
Filework and Carving

jeffj hit on an important topic for me which is materials. Stag is a primary focus for me in my collecting. I like most styles of knives mentioned so far, with the exception of some tacticals and some fantasy pieces. I'm more of a traditionalist. With Bowies, daggers and hunters being my favorites. I've been known to say everything looks better with stag. I've also been told that if someone put a stag handle on a ballpeen hammer I would buy it. Well, I might not buy it, but I sure would look.

This is probably not the best time to be collecting stag. I've resorted to buying the stag (at shows) and then finding a maker to make the knife I want.
I'd love to hear from makers and collectors who love stag as much is I do. I have a pretty good file of pictures of stag handled knives, but I would sure love to see more.

I'd also like to know what other handle material turns the people here on. I would think pearl would have a good following. I don't understand the passion for synthetics, but I'm willing to learn.

I could go on and on about stag, but I'm sure you get my point.

Thanks Brian, Jeff, Carver. Wulf, Jerry, Tom and Phil.

Tom - oops I missed another one!

Jerry - Geez kitchen knives - can not believe I left those out. George Tichborne, Wayne Hensley who I have a great abount of restpect for would scold me!. Not sure if you make them or not, but I would not want to get scolded by you either next weekend. I would hate to have to spend all my time trying to stay clear of you and Wayne

. Might be a tough job knowing the knives you two make.

Jeff & Phil - Materials is a fantastic idea.

Carver - much better grouping than we came up with.

Brian - Yup me too as far as most favorites. I am glad you brought it up.

Wulf - You nailed it down for us. With your idea we can have a couple of active topics a month.

Let's let this fester a little longer.
Thanks again for taking the time to post. These ideas are great. For what it is worth, I think we should use them all.

(I think once we get a good base of information the monthly active topic aspect will not be needed - we will see.)

Thanks for the chance Gus!

It seems that people have ideas...the beauty of a 'forum'. I think that you may be very busy soon...and BF will be better for it.

Whoo hoo Brian! Now that's thinking!

Locks and Balisongs for sure. Your other suggestions don't fit the 'styles' idea, but I would love to see the Masters included.

The 'Not on the Net' would be great also...but since they are by definition....it might be difficult.

Keep it coming guys I like the ideas and the support. Each time I read the new ideas in this thread I get more fired up about the concept.

This idea came from John Owenby. It is not mine, but I have had a good time going back and forth with him over the last two days.

I'll be glad to be a part of it, but it is going to take the support of all of us that want it to make it work. I have been lucky to meet a lot of folks, but I may need some help in a few areas. If we can make it work it is going to be purdy dern cool.

Off to go try to get in touch with some puukko makers
