Hey, I'm interested in getting a kife with largish fixed blade 4 or more inches. I'd like significant durability, and that's more or less my only want. I'm in Canada, and looking to spend about 50$. Thanks for the help.

Have a look at Triplex their are hand made in Canada and come in 01 carbon steel. I.m not sure about the prices in dollars but well worth a look .
.

I CONCUR... TRIPLE X KNIVES, ARE A VERY GOOD KNIFE FOR A FAIR PRICE. However none are "ABOUT 50$" thou.
Even tougher given the USD -> CAD, to try find a fair production model. And it really depends on how you want to use. it... SOG / Gerber make some in-expensive versions as well as Condor. hope this points you in the right direction ...

Bravo 1.
Edit: I just noticed you said $50 bucks......forget the Bravo 1, or save up.

Becker BK 5 off the exchange.... plenty of 50.00 offerings clearing out after the BK20 packaging deal.... the BK5 is not the perfect bushcraft knife ( though there are those that would argue that point ) but it'll cover about 95 to 97% of your needs outstandingly, and at 50.00 for a discontinued, sure to become a classic Becker it'll never be money poorly spent.

just my 0.02...

$50 eh, could be hard to find something in the price. Id look into the Mora bushcraft. With the terrible Canadian dollar right now, best try and find something here in north to purchase too. The exchange rate at the moment is a killer.

Why do I keep coming back to this thread lol? We'd all rather save up DeadboxHero, but this guy has 1 post asking for a durable $50 knife, so the Carothers and GSOs and Shaerks and so on and so forth aren't in his wheelhouse at this very moment, nor should they be IMHO until he puts a sub $100 blade through the ringer so he can see what he likes, what the blade is lacking, and get a tangible idea of what he wants to put future money towards.

Condor and Becker knives are solid suggestions.

I'll offer a final blade for your consideration Asillywalrus and then I'm done I promise haha.

The Bushman from Cold Steel sells for $29+change. The original sheath failed on me the first week it was in my Cherokee (the inside of it crumbled presumably from UV exposure) but you still have $20 for a generic nylon or leather sheath - or a Mora to help hone in on what you're truly after.

The steel is SK-5 and I put this blade through the ringer. I was in the mountains of WV and batoned a cross cut through a 8" thick dead standing angiosperm with a righteously hardened core. It was a brutal battle but the blade and I won. I was in a popular area massacred by trendy hipsters and there were little to no firewood options. There is a small chip on the spine, and that's because I started BATONING WITH A ROCK at one point because all the baton sticks were partially rotted and breaking on me. As you can see it held up fine to the job, as did the edge.

It's fully integral, so no worries of shotty thread welds in the handle or weakened tail tangs. Keep in mind the handle is hard steel...and round. The blade has a hefty belly. I'm no Cold Steel fanboy, believe me, I've seen the youtube videos of the failed chunky cross grain in certain blades.

Again, good luck!

It seems like a quality knife is too expensive for me haha. I'm not sure what the exchange is, but the bk5 is 110$ on Amazon. The bushman cold steel looks like a great knife for me. Thanks for the help everyone!

Please remember that you add $50 or more to the price of a knife by adding "bushcraft" to it...

You just might like it. It is really minimalist. You might want to do something about that round steel handle, though.

I have tennis racket grip tape on mine, and it grips pretty well, but feels a bit fat in the hand. I may try some bicycle inner tube, or maybe try to fashion something out of Sugru.

Spend a tad more and grab an LT Wright bushcraft HC. Made in the USA and handmade. I got mine in today and the fit and finish is incredible.

What about an ontario old hickory butcher knife and a dremel ?
They're dirt cheap, use great 1095 steel, and you can give it whatever blade shape you want.
You could also get an old carbon steel butcher or cleaver from a thrift store for a couple bucks and modify it.
This is the best way to go when your on a budget and it's a fun project.
There's really no need to buy anything fancy. Bush craft is the practice of traditional woods skills, and it doesn't get any better than using exactly what men used to survive in the frontier days.

Condor Bushlore is going for about $55 with free shipping right now on the Canadian "Big River" site.

It'll do what you want, comes with a pretty great sheath, and is about as "bushcrafty" as you can get.

I'm now looking at the Condor Bushlore and the Bushman Cold Steel. Does anyone have an opinion on the two of these? I understand that steel quality is important, but that's all i know. Not sure which steel is better or anything. Also a friend mentioned the Schrade SCHF 36. Thanks for the help again everyone!
