Suggest a Knife for a Girl Turning 11

One of our kids is hinting at a new knife for her birthday. She kind of has her
heart set on the BR Trickle pictured below (crimson and gold elder burl) but I
haven't seen any with those scales for sale lately. In fact, neither DLT nor
KSF list any Trickles at all.

Other options I am considering are the BR Mikro Canadian and BR PSK (below).

I would like to keep the blade length 2" or shorter. She is not as hardcore
woodsy as her siblings and will probably use the knife primarily for harvesting
wild plants.

Any other suggestions?

is she set on a fixed blade? and is she set on pink?

the doug ritter fixed blade comes in pink i believe, and you can get spyderco folding knives in pink.

i might also suggest a mora or a two layer SAK if the pink isn't the highest concern. i think you can even get alox SAks in pink if you look hard.

At 10 my daughter got a SAK huntsman, in blue that she carries everywhere but school in her purse. At 12 she got a Ka-bar skinner, similar to the 1st sheath knife I ever got, that she often carries in her purse (she either kicks ass or I should be very afraid). I just got a Luke Svenson knife that she has been strongly hinting at stealing from me. Might meet your requierments, and Luke is a fantastic guy to work with.

I would get her a Fallkniven WM1 as that is around the size you want and it was also designed for a females hand size !!!

Fixed blade - yes.

Pink - not necessarily. Is it more the beauty of the design and scales.

She thinks Moras look like puke (she can be high maintenance). She already has
a Leatherman S4 she carries constantly - so she has a blade available, she would
just like something a little more robust and attractive.

A smallish sized lockblade. It's a great way to start!

As far as a fixed blade, how about a mini Ka-Bar? Cheap and tough.

Pitdog - the WM1 is one of the first knives that came to mind to me also. However,
she would hate the looks of the grip.

Rockywolf - it has to be a fixed blade. Cheap? She is the antithesis of that.

Contact Nick Allen/ NWA about his 4" skinner- my 12 yr old son won't part with his, so I had to buy my own...

Hmmm i don't own any blades that are 2 inches or smaller not even folders
(except for a few Vic Classics).
The Buck 102 Woodsman is a comfortable and light "smallish" fixed blade.
Or maybe a AG Russell fixed blade Woodswalker? The blade on that is under 3 inches.
Too bad she doesn't like Moras. They come in a bunch of colors, check ragweed forge.
Maybe theres a color there she will like.

If a slipjoint folder is acceptable the Vic alox Cadet is currently available in a few colors.
If a lockblade is preferred then the Buck 55 is sufficiently small and seems sturdy.

Ragweed Forge also sells EKA folders that are very sharp and come in different colors.
Actually there are some shorter bladed EKA fixed blades there that also look good.

tholiver - I also considered the Woodswalker. However, like many others, the grip is not
quite there on looks.

I have spent probably hours looking at all the offerings on Ragweed Forge (for me).

The Wood Jewel "Children's Knife" (http://www.ragweedforge.com/wj-l.jpg) was a brief
thought, but I don't think it is quite there.

Imagine the Princess and the Pea. Now, imagine the princess is 10 years old, her favorite
snack is caviar, and she invests in the stock market.

Now imagine the princess wants a new elegant, compact, fixed blade...

Polymath, I've got a Mikro Canadian II that I use as an EDC, and I think it would be a fine choice. You can get it pretty plain, or gussy it up like crazy. If you wanted to spend a biiiiit more, however, there's a run of the Pro Scalpel II coming out soonish, so you could choose the handle types, pin types, liners, etc of your choice. It's a bit bigger than what you listed, but looks like quite the nice knife.

Good luck with her! :D

... primarily for harvesting wild plants.

I'd probably just use my curved little Henckles kitchen knife for that. I think if I wanted something new it would be a cross between a gardening knife and a kitchen knife kind of thing. I think I'd go with the BRK T.U.S.K.

That said, the mini version would probably be more fitting the brief -

I don't know man, knives are pretty personal. If that's the one she wants it is likely for more than one reason.

If I were you, I would just look hard to find that one(it is a beauty after all).

Maybe contact BR and see if they know of any retailers that have recently received a shipment of them.
