My wife is about to start a new job where she will be traveling a lot and gone often. I want her to have a knife to carry with her that she can use for whatever various utilities she may need, but she is new to knives so I'd like the following:
Easy to open and close, with a closure system that keeps her fingers out of harms way

Relatively inexpensive, she tends to lose things so no $100+ knives

No tacticool looking things

Get her one of the various Swiss Army knives, If you want to go small, the minichamp could be perfect. Whatever you get her, get her something with atleast a screwdriver/caplifter on it as sooner or later, everyone tries to use their blade for a screwdriver, having a screwdriver on the knife will prevent that.
You don't say if she'll be doing a lot of cutting or such. If per chance she needs to cut lots of cardboard, the 111mm Vics have a serrated blade that sharpens easily(unllike other serrated blades) and though large, would serve her well. Basically just ask your wife what she does, go to the victorinox site, bring up the catalog and go down it an find her the perfect knife. I'm partial to the Explorer myself.

I would suggest a Benchmade Mini Grip. The axis lock keeps her fingers safe and not tactical looking. Plus they come in different colors.

My wife and daughter both own SAKs. Always a safe way to go if there is a possibility being around non knife people.

Yup. Mini-Grip. Hard to find a better small utilitarian blade with a stout lock that keeps your fingers out of the way when closing. Lots of colors and blade shapes as well. Emphasize the not misplacing it part as the price will be close to $100.

Can't go wrong with any sak, and I agree with the Mini Grip. Especially with variety, lots of colors, blade shapes, satin or black coating, thumb studs or Spydiehole, serrations or non.. There HAS to be something of interest.

Could you say more about those "utilities" might be? How handy is she? Is dealing with food an issue?

Could you say more about how much she's willing to carry?

For the most utility for the least weight, I recommend the Leatherman Micra. It really handles most tasks in an urban/suburban setting.

If she's handy and apt to tackle bigger tasks, I find the Leatherman Juice line to be amazing. I took one this past weekend to open my uncle's camp instead of s full sized MT and was stunned at how well the Juice did. Ounce for ounce, more functionality than any SAK or any other MT I've owned.

If food prep is a need, I find the women in my life take to the Opinel well, as it has a familiar folding paring knife feel.

This is a very capable combination.

Bought my wife and daughters the Spyderco Delica. They love them. I agree with the mini grip also.

My wife often carries a Spyderco Delica.
Available in just about any colour one could want.
Cuts well, good lock, good ergonomics.

What about a traditional lockback like the Case Copper Lock. Crap loads of handle materials and colors to choose from. Nice clip blade, good size for a woman's hands, the lock works very easily and probably won't draw much attention when she uses it.

I wonder how the OP feels about the Spyderco lock backs? I would recommend the delica all day long, in fact that is what my wife has. It seems to me one needs to put ones fingers in the way of the closing blade to unlock the knife, even two handed though I consider it completely safe and a non-issue.

Agree on the Benchmade Mini Griptilian. I suggest the standard 154CM steel with the sheepsfoot blade and thumb hole (555HG). Comes in pink and light blue handles if the black is too scary.

Might also throw in a Victorinox Classic or Rambler for the scissors and nail file.
