Hey All,

First post, just thought I would aks some questions since I am now jumping in to one expensive line of knives here. Just traded into an 3.5 inch XM 18 flipper. I have 3 g10 scales but have been wanting to buy either a Ti, or a CF scale. BTW, the folks ar R Hinderer knives are very nice and responsive. A++++++

My current purchase list:

Blue Anno'd Ti scale
Blue Anno'd Ti standoffs

Possible other items:

Armorer's tool ($175) --> $175 for a tool is dang near the cost of a NEW ti scale. is it worth it to buy this?
Blue Anno'd Clip and insert

What suggestions do you guys have for a newbie? I see tons of options, and my eyes just glaze over.

Buy the PSD spanner tool from Monkey edge. I got the combo Hinderer/Strider tool for $75. Best of both worlds.

Both right. The regular SS one is $75.00. The Ti is $175.00

On the subject of tools, Good tools are always worth the price.
Yes, the thread on mine was humor and I ended up making one just because that's what you do when you are solving a problem in the moment.
The "real" Hinderer Armorer tool is a nice specialized tool well worth buying IF someone is going to own an XM.

Then time to hunt for the SS tool. While the Ti is sweet, the XM18 has blown any budget I will have for the next few months.

I am already planning at least a blue ti scale, and blue ti standoffs or a cf scale and different standoffs.

Fantastic knives all the way around I hear. And your tool post is very good. Makes me want to carry a SD screw driver for those pesky mice.

As far as your other items, color combo is a really personal (subjective) call. Sounds like a lot of Blue, maybe go in steps or combo the color i.e. Stonewash Ti scale with the Blue annodized stand offs. Your call.
I bought my one XM already decked out in Bronze annodized Ti. The anno process does not match on each item which I couldn't care less about but just mentioning in case that is an issue for you.

I just use gunsmithing screwdriver tips. Brownell's Magna-Tip Bits come in a bunch of different sizes and are made of hollow ground heat treated tool steel. If they're good enough for high end shotguns and custom 1911's they're good enough for my knives. Use two of the size #360-7 and grind a slot into one with a dremel to make a perfectly fit spanner and flat head screwdriver bit set.

I was scared that I didn't have a tool made by Hinderer for these screws because of a few threads out there where they needed replacement screws. But I tried it yesterday and switched the clip and filler tab positions, it was very simple and fast. It was very easy and I was very careful. So if anyone else out there was concerned, it shouldn't be a problem!

Yes. Clip and filler just small Phillips screwdriver.

Hmmm... that's funny. The one I changed out yesterday had hex screws. This got me wondering so I looked at some of my other knives, most of the ones that take the phillips screwdriver but I have others that use the hex... I never noticed that before.

Hmmm that is interesting. I will have to look too. In any case, as you were careful I would advise anyone to do the same.
Nothing more frustrating than stripping your screw 9:00 on a Saturday night and then kicking yourself for not being more careful.
Well, stabbing yourself in the eye with a tootsie roll would possibly be slightly more frustrating but....
As I was frustrated for a bit one Saturday afternoon after realizing I had not picked up the Armorers Tool when I had the chance - I say it's a handy little tool to have just to avoid frustration if nothing else.
My Hinderer's AND I are worth the money.

What? Have you done this before? Is that even possible? :foot:

Yes, it is worth it to have the tool, I would have to agree.

Something that rarely gets mentioned is that you can hold the knife with the Armorers Tool engaging the pivot with one hand. That is a bit harder to do with a screwdriver or other homemade pivot apparatus.
