Been brooding about a Spyderco for some time but the choice is almost too vast...What do you suggest as a 1st model which may lead to others... I don't want anything too large as my palms are small but fingers long. Perhaps a coloured handle (was thinking about that newish model with green/grey colour is it Endura4?) Price under 100 dolls, maybe partly serrated blade. I need your suggestions please? Is the dragonfly too small+ How about a Byrd of some kind?

I would say Delica 4. The Delica has done more for Spyderco as a whole than any other design. It is a classic and the 4 is a great knife.

Start with their #1 and go from there. For under $100 you could get a Delica and a Cricket, both classic designs that fill their roles very well!

Delica 4 is a good start, but if you want to spend more, I can not think about anything better than Caly3

Best thing to do at this stage is find a cutlery store near you that sells Spydercos, and just start handling them. If you like one and the price is right, pull the trigger. If it's too expensive in the store, record what you want and check it out online. There are many reputable dealers that sell for a good amount under MSRP. Enjoy.

i win the award 4 weirdest first spyderco ! : spot nk. Its my first spydie so far and i like it

Delica 4 with the ZDP-189 steel. There's a reason that the Delica is one of the first Spyderco knives and remains one of the most popular.

S30V or VG-10 isn't bad at all, but ZDP-189 is the newest of the "exotic" steels.

OK and thanks for your views! Real prob is I live in far off Scandinavia and no cutlers or knife shops for hundreds of kms, so gentlemen(and any blady-ladies)Im at the mercy of excrement-bay, good in many respects but you can't feel the goods before paying.Bit like a brothel really....

Endura or Delica. Lots of different versions and true classics. You can decide if shorter or longer blade suits you better, wave or not, steel, edge type...

What laws do Scandinavia have regarding knives? Any limits on length or lock types?

Do you know what size you would like? Do you want an every day cary (EDC) knife, or a camping knife, or ??

For your first I would really echo the recommendations above and tell you to get a delica. The delica is a great EDC size. Not to big not to small. If you are looking for something small but "large" look at the Lava. I am amazed everytime I use this knife how so much cutting potential is packed in this small knife.

I think the Native III might be a good starter... or for a more friendly easy on the eye but still useful go the Lava. Both excellent but won't break the bank for a first-up.

You won't use them for long anyway because once you handle either one, you'll be Spyder-bitten and will go for something like a Delica, Caly3 or Mili.

Willgoy, if you haven't made your decision yet let me throw in my vote for a delica. Great spyderco to start with, in my opinion. Clean lines, simple design, and great utility folder.

Willgoy,

Definitely the Delica 4 OR the Caly 3. Let us know what you end up with.

Laws fairly easy-going, Finland is the land of the puukko remember. So long as you are not brandishing a knife in public and threatening somebody with it you can have what you like. Flick knives (switch blades?)are not allowed but who likes those hideous stiletto things from Germany anyway;) Knives can be an article of dress even, eg long hunting knives but probably not on a visit to the bank or medical-centre :D

I'm after a Spyder for EDC and general duties. As I wrote, I have smallish palms but long fingers so I don't want some massive saw...How about the Salsa? That looks compact & is semi-serrated. Or Dragonfly? Coloured handle make a change from black too. Once saw some stag or bone scales Spyder, fantastic quality but for me the combination of the two doesn't work. Bit like having a pump action Purdey shotgun if you see what I mean...Thanks for your help.
