Suggestions for 1st Spyder?

OK I will but due to lack of cutlers or knife shops I'm forced to try my luck on excrement-bay

Check out the Centofante 4 and maybe the 3. I like the 4 better. IMHO, it is a Delica beater for sure. It out Delicas the Delica. The Delica is the old standard and sort of the hall mark of Spyderco but the Cent 3 and 4 are better knives in book. They are the same price as well so that should make it easy to compare them. Check out a Cent 4 and a Delica 4 side by side and see what you prefer. They are about $45 give or take steet prices.

You get a lot of knife for the money but they are still considered entry level Spydercos. In a few months, you will be dropping $100 a week on Spydercos if you are anything like me. They are addicting and you really can't go too far wrong with any model but there are certain models that are more specialized than others. The Cent 3-4 and Delica are good all around knives. Also, the Calypso 3 is a great one but it about twice the price of the Centofante 4 or Delica. It is worth it but you may not want to spend $90 on your first Spyderco. I think it is twice as good as either the Delica or the Cent 4 in materials and quality but truth be told, the Cent 4 or 3 will do pretty much everything the Caly 3 will do.

kgriggs8, is that your picture as in self-portrait? Didn't realize such impressive bodies posted on this thread....

Anyway, I had to take the plunge and as you point out, this will probably be the start of a long and expensive infatuation but so what? I've ordered a Delica combo in foliage green for about 32 euro/41 dollar. You know, Spyderco could be the American classic of the 21st century, innovative modern yes but timeless simplicity and craftsmanship, in the way the French Opinel has always been a simple but individual knife.Let's see...

It came today   Spyderco Delica in foliage green with part serrated edge from an excellent e-bayer 41 dollar plus post. Extremely pleased with it,clipped into my inside jacket pocket that is also green. The handles are superb, the weight/bite ratio is extraordinary-light but in no way- flimsy but that blade is a SLASHER alright:D Might have to change the location of the clip but don't have the torqx key for it. Interesting the way the green colour alters, really Chaemeleon-like.

Overall, faultless a modern simple ingenious Opinel-like classic. well done US and Japan!

For $100, you could get both a delica 4 and an endura 4, that way you will have something you like no matter what. Some people find that the handle on the delica is too small while others find that the endura is too big, but I have yet to find someone who likes neither one. A lot of us also like both a great deal.

FRN Delica 4 or FRN Endura 4. You will not be disappointed. The new generation Delicas and Enduras are great knives and are built for repeated hard use.

If you are looking for a smaller blade I would suggest the Dragonfly. My first Spydie was a Dragonfly stainless. Still love it and has been EDCd every day for 4-5 years.

the salsa was my first spydie and i was in love with it the finger grooves fit my hand perfectly plus on top of the spydie whole there is a flat peice to catch your thumb on not quiet sure what it is called but it is perfect for a faster opening
