ranger rd-4

+1 Price cant be beat.

Or, this little gem, which seems right up your alley...the Queen Premium Hunter in D2 w/ Oak Handle...they can be found for under $50 and are a great value.

I also like Bark Rivers....you could pick up one of each for $200 with some thrifty shopping.

The Bark River 'Gameskeeper' is a great fit into your parameters: A-2 steel, .215" thick, convex grind, ~4", hunter style, choil & finger guard, full exposed tang with lanyard tube, etc. I bought mine in the least expensive handle material - natural Micarta. It is a fantastic knife for bushcraft - or, as designed, hunting. Below it is shown with a bocote handled Boone, also a fine knife:

If you want the Gameskeeper without the choil and finger guard, ie, a bit more blade and then handle, consider the Bark River 'Montana Guide'.

Thanks. I really liked the natural and functional look of the koyote knives by Cristoff. I e-mailed him a quick note, but then later found some knives that look like something I would like to order. I plan to follow up with him and put in an order for my perfect knife. Thanks to all for the help.

I did look at the Doziers quite a bit, but didn't love the hollow grind and price, but they are very pretty knives. I also like the Fallkniven quite a bit and will keep them in mind.

A classic scandinavian hunting knife that also can take a whole lot of beating (batoning and such) is the Fallkniven H1. If you dont like the handle material you can get in as a blade only and have someone make a handle for you exactly the way you want it to be.

I'll second the tip for a Daniel Koster. I bought one of his Bushcraft knives and it's never let me down. I should be doing a bit of a beasting/test on it next week so will hopefully have a thread up to show how much of a bargain this knife is.

Have you looked at a Frost Mora knife? For the price they can't be beaten. You should be able to get one on the bay for less than $10. Don't let the price scare you off though, the Swedish Army issues them to it's soldiers and there's plenty of good Bushcraft schools out there that recommend them.

There's a guy on Youtube just now with about 30 videos of him in the 'field' using his Mora. Just search for Hobbexp. Here he is whittling a spoon, if you can do that with the knife then you can do just about any daily tasks.

Well, I got my knife on monday afternoon after ordering friday morning from Koyote knives!! The knife is great, beautifully done, perfect finish, sharp with a comfortable heft to it. I ended up going with a model 1 that Cristof had just put the handle on. Ipe handle, 15n20 steel with expedition sheath. I appreciate all the helpful suggestions, but just fell in love with the old school craftsmanship and originality of Koyote knives. Thanks to Cristof for the great knife and thanks to abiggs here for pointing me to him. I will post a pic, but I am not allowed so I may have to put it on photobucket. Very happy new owner.
