Summertime and the livin is easy is a line from a song...in the case of knifemakers it is the hardest time of the year to motivate yourself.

In my business it is time to restock for the fall season and start thinking about Christmas...only 6 months away. The question is how does a guy motivate himself when it is hot in the shop, the fishing rod is hanging on the wall and the dog is ready to go?

Forced myself to get to work on some folders in the last month or so and even made my first left handed liner lock. Now that was difficult, kept having to check myself to make sure that I was drilling and counter sinking holes on the correct side of the liners. I actually made it all the way through without having to throw anything away and start over.

It was 100 degrees yesterday in the shade, a little cooler in the shop thanks to fans and closed doors. Still it is hard to think about Christmas inventory.

Today will be hotter and more humid again, thunderstorms this afternoon. I guess the only thing to do will be to make up a big pot of coffee and pretend it is cold outside and the furnace is going full blast.

I first read this a half hour ago and I still can't get the strains of Janis Joplin's wonderful interpretation of the song out of my head. I'm gonna have to dig "Cheap Thrills" out.

Thanks for the memory, George!

Postscript.... "what a rush" to hear that again. It's been awhile. Straight back to 1968! :)

Those were the good days, Mike.
Some of them are a little foggy, but I remember most of the good ones..........

That's a really fun song to play on the sax. My dads beagle "sings" along whenever he hears that one and "Oh What a Beautiful Morning."

Fitzo, sometime listen to Black Velvet if you can. "Mississippi in the middle of a dry spell...". I think Black Velvet is the title, but I can't remember who sang it, but she was female and had a VOICE! Maybe you can find it on Google and hear it online somewhere. It's another great Southern summertime song. Right now it's running about 75 at night and 95 most afternoons here.

"Mississippi in the middle of a dry spell
Jimmy Rogers on the Victrola up high
Mama's dancin' with baby on her shoulder
The sun is settin' like molasses in the sky
The boy could sing, knew how to move, everything
Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for........."

Alannah Myles - Black Velvet

This turned into creating a "playlist" for our day, in celebration of "Foggy Days Past":

Zephyr....great CO band with a lady who sang like a Janis, Candy Givens. She drowned in a hot tub in 1984, drunk and stoned on too many 'ludes. Damn, those 714s were good. (1969)

Jefferson Airplane..."Volunters" (1969); "Blows Against the Empire" (1970)

Grateful Dead......."American Beauty" (1970)

Quicksilver Messenger Service........"Happy Trails" (1969)

Hot Tuna........"Hot Tuna" (1970)

Poco.........."Poco"

James Gang......."Rides Again" (1970)

Santana......"Santana" (1969).........."Abraxas" (1970)

New Riders of the Purple Sage....."Best of" (Gotta hear "Panama Red":D)

Flying Burrito Brothers........"Best of"

CSNY......"Deja Vu" (1970)

Deja Vu seemed quite appropriate as a theme for a day...... and we might just end up with David Crosby's "If I Could Only Remember My Name" (1971)

There ya go, Karl! :)

Thanks for the inspiration, George!

You mean Smokey Daze Past???

Well, kinda sorta....yeah. :o Let's just say I enjoyed the 70's a great deal. I think. ;) :D

Karl, thanks for that link. Dr. Mudd, you were quite right. Excellent voice and song, both.

For all you "old timers", how about "Hot time, summer in the city, back of my neck getting dirty and gritty......."

.. ....makes me want to dig out the old box of vinyl! [albums,'records',for the younger viewers :D :D ]

Now wait a minute - where is Bob Wills, Patsy Cline, Roy Orbison, Ernest Tubb?

Ernest Tubb??

He went off to the movies with Lester Flatt And Earl Scruggs !
(And just so you know what I'm talkin' about, I AM! the proud owner of, and DO! own "The Best of Walter Brennan"!)
What do ya' think of me now!??!

Hey man, thats an awesome playlist  You've got good taste in tunes ;)

And yeah George, I've been having a hard time with motivation the past couple weeks also. A nice morning walk around the hay fields helps me out a bit. Walked up on a whitetail doe with new fawn this morning. :)

Now wait a minute - where is Bob Wills, Patsy Cline, Roy Orbison, Ernest Tubb?

Well, Bill, out of respec' for the even older folkses around here ;), tomorrow I'll scrounge up my Patsy Cline cd, and Roy of course. I have no Bob W & TP, so I'll have to settle for Asleep at the Wheel. I'm still thinking on a substitute for Tubb...don't know if I can manage that without digging out the turntable for vinyl.

But, what I'll also do is listen to a doowop collection. That oughtta cover the 50's and earlier 60's ok.

I'll be thinking of you tomorrow, my friend.

Glad you like my playlist, David. thanks! :) We like music and have a fairly decent collection.

Hey fitzo you guys must be "Baby Boomers" On the list of bands and songs you posted I'll be darned if I can tell which is which.
Hey i already got a knife done and am working on a couple others. I'm going to keep my day job for a while yet.
Take care
TJ

Actually, those were albums, TJ. :) Yeah, I guess that's what we are, baby boomers. I'm 55, a remnant of that period of "long haired freaks;) " that resulted from the Summer of Love and Woodstock. Interesting times, the late 60's and early 70's. Great music. Great partying. A lot of turbulence that made for a lot of rebelliousness and resentment of authority. Worked for me. :)

Gotta add, though, that then, like now, there was little partying for those off fighting a damnable war. A moment's silence for those who never return. :(

George, I know exactly what you are talking about. I do my work in the shop in gym shorts, tee, and sandals with no socks. Wearing that respirator is such a burden when the sweat is running from your respirator all the way down to your toes in a river. Kinda gross. Sometimes I have to stop to change clothes after soaking through.
