Summer Time

The first use of the song was in "Porgy and Bess", can't recall for sure who wrote it but Rogers and Hammerstein come to mind.

Toughed it out today until about 3 PM then called it quits for the shop and returned home to do some leather work. The thundershowers didn't show up but a cold front is beginning to push into the area, thank goodness.

Great bunch of tunes guys, I'm not quite as old as Mr.Fitzo but I do like the music and remember it quite well :)

I put AC in my shop 7 years ago. Absolutely the best thing I have ever added to my shop.

It's a George Gershwin tune, George. Great song from a great musical (1935).

George,
If you'd like some young blood around the shop to give you a swift kick in the behind when you stop lagging let me know. Just be sure the coffee is on and I'll see if I can pencil you in. Good luck to you and take care. See you Tues.

-Chris

I went with the AC in the middle of last summer. I should have done it years ago. It cost me about $500 but what a difference in the "working conditions"!

"Born to be Wild"

Ain't got the HD yet, but give me time :D

I also like RHCP, "Californication" is pretty good. and ZZTop as well.

Thanks to a mate, i now have a reasonable collection of irish drinking songs too :D

Starship Troopers (the book - Good, the movie - CRAP!) saw me download the ballad of rodger young, and I've a mp3 of "praise the lord and pass the ammo" around too

a pretty eclectic collection, but I don't listen to music when working.

I stand corrected Fitzo but it is 50 years since I last had a recording of Porgy and Bess. It dissappeared because of political correctness somewhere along the line.

I should correct a couple things. It's an opera, not a musical. Music by George Gerswhin, lyrics by Ira Gershwin.

The opera has never totally disappeared from production, but it remains controversial, and perhaps misunderstood.

There was an A&E (or maybe History Channel?) documentary on the piece a few years back which we really enjoyed.

This turned into creating a "playlist" for our day, in celebration of "Foggy Days Past":

Zephyr....great CO band with a lady who sang like a Janis, Candy Givens. She drowned in a hot tub in 1984, drunk and stoned on too many 'ludes. Damn, those 714s were good. (1969)

Jefferson Airplane..."Volunters" (1969); "Blows Against the Empire" (1970)

Grateful Dead......."American Beauty" (1970)

Quicksilver Messenger Service........"Happy Trails" (1969)

Hot Tuna........"Hot Tuna" (1970)

Poco.........."Poco"

James Gang......."Rides Again" (1970)

Santana......"Santana" (1969).........."Abraxas" (1970)

New Riders of the Purple Sage....."Best of" (Gotta hear "Panama Red":D)

Flying Burrito Brothers........"Best of"

CSNY......"Deja Vu" (1970)

Deja Vu seemed quite appropriate as a theme for a day...... and we might just end up with David Crosby's "If I Could Only Remember My Name" (1971)

There ya go, Karl! :)

Thanks for the inspiration, George!

Great list Mike. I am glad to see someone else remembers Happy Trails.

I would add Ten Years After.........Undead......1967

Jefferson Airplane.........Surrealistic Pillow..........1967

It's A Beautiful Day..........1971

ZZ Top........First Album.......1971---Pure Bar Blues.

Undead has a very good version of Summertime. The rest of the album is 900 MPH blues boogie as only Alvin Lee could play it.

Most excellent choices, Steve!

You know, you hit one I don't have on CD....Undead. :o

IaBD gets played about once a month here. Love that album. Nanc gives you two thumbs up for that one!

Quicksilver MS to me is the early albums, totally psychedelic. A poster of John Cippolina hangs over my computer desk downstairs. It's from the R&R HoF "Psychedelic Era" display and says "Feed Your Head". One of my early guitar heroes.

Cool about Top. Most people don't even know about that first album. :)

We heard "Somebody to Love" while out driving this afternoon. I think I was half in love with rebellious Grace Slick when I was younger. LOL

I think we need to start a music thread again. :)

Yeah, I had the hots for Slick too. I used to call the band the Jefferson Hairpie in her honor.

Anyone that hasn't heard it, ZZ top First Album is one of the best white boy blues albums of all time. It is out on CD, I have bought it twice and will again, the next time I see it.

In Happy Trails, QSM took Bo Diddley to places he never even imagined. Mona is one of my all time favorite R&R songs, too.
