Super Commander's are here

My SC showed yesterday! Green scale, plain edge hard Chrome #72.

I like it a lot! Feels solid in the hand, fit and finish is getting a lot closer to custom. I'm satisfied!:D

Alright, let me get my Nomex all pulled on and zipped up.

I just received my HC/Green Handled Super Commander and after looking it over wondered where my $369.00 went. Candidly, it looks like an oversized (blade only) 2002 Commander. I like the 2002-ish improvements and certainly like the Commander design, but the liner lock, (thin one at that) regular (thin) liners and "nothing to write home about" fit and finish just do not seem to justify the price IMHO.

With that said, why did I buy it? Well, I like the design and function of the Commander, appreciate the improvements for 2002 and liked the idea of a slightly larger version. I also considered the fact that is was limited production, a TAD exclusive and how those factors may impact future collector value. The problem with the Collector's Value approach is that I am now reluctant to EDC and use this knife; even though it would appear to suit my task profiles nicely and the HC finish lends itself to many of my waterbourne and tougher coastal area uses.

In short, it's a very expensive production (albeit limited production) user and probably a decent collector though I did not buy it for that purpose. Bottom line, I think it's overpriced.

By way of rationalization, however, I've spend more than the $369 on occaison in life and have gotten less. On the other hand, I think I could have spent less and gotten more, but not a limted edition Commander.

Thanks for the report Nimrod.

I have been wrestling with whether or not to order a S.C. for some time now. I feel bad since I did pre-order through TAD, and had every intention of buying, until I saw the price, which really sent me reeling.
I really can't justify spending that much on one, much less the set of 2 that I wanted.
Had these been priced closer to retail of a regular Commander, I'm sure they would have been sold out by now, and I would have 2 in my possession.

I pre-ordered one too. After all the whining in this forum I thought that thick liners would be an almost sure thing. It wasn´t. So I´m not buying it. Too bad. Great design otherwise, especially after the changes. I´ll be buying a Strider or a Hossom (if the orderbooks get opened again) instead.

Compare the Super Commander to the Buck-Strider or SERE2K (plus a $pare or TWO !!!) and you really have to be an EKI fan to justify it. I am ... but it's getting harder.

Nice to see I am not the only one that "choked" a bit on the price of the "Superized" Commander. Limited Production "collectability", the Bag/Shoulder Harness combo and Oh Yeah, that Extra QUARTER INCH...of blade just do not justify the price in my book. At current prices that "Extra" steel is worth roughly $800.00 an inch!! The Commander is a superb piece of bladeware but in the "pseudo" ES1-M configuration offered by the Super, the "coins" just do not add up. Pricing on this one was apparently "set" by EKI. Sadly I think Ernie dropped the ball on this one. Just my two cents worth...

As to the numbering system, I still don't understand. My OD green plain edge is number 076. What gives?

I've got a post up on the trade forums, also. If anyone's interested in owning a MIB super com and wants to trade for it rather than buy it, go look over there.

Guys,

I just received my two SC's from TAD. Let me tell you the pric won't even be a matter of discussion when you handle them. This is truly a ES1M sized folder. I know there is a lot of talk about the thiner liners but I still have never heard of an EKI knife with bad liners. So get over it. I have. This baby is going to be my daily carry. The larger handle really aids in the grip.

As far as I know there is no future plans for the SC to be part of the regular production. So if you miss out it is your loss.

AncientSUL, SC are still available at TAD. They are not sold out yet. With such a steep price tag, there is not much of a rush for them.

Liong, thanks for the info. I'm sure the SC is an awesome knife and make no mistake, I really want one. It's just so hard for me to justify plunking down almost $400 for one (not to mention that I want the set) when I can buy a brand new Glock for that much.
I guess that's what really separates the knife nuts from the gun nuts.
:)

That's not for me either. I got a "commemorative" knife from another company and it's in my pocket right now. Uh, but it sells for under $100. Leo G.
