HI guys! there was a link somewhere here to some company that sells 4" long super thick "cant remember diameter"firesteels, anyone here can help me out? thanks

I just bought half a docen 100mm x 10mm firesteels.... You wouldn't believe what a great time I am having while drilling holes in them! :D :D :D

Someone posted about a supplier over in Asia that will make pretty much whatever size you want. They had one that was something like 1" x 8"! The minimum order was pretty huge, plus you have to deal with FOB charges, so it would be kind of a pain. I might talk to my boss to see if we can order some for our store. Having a firesteel that big would just be fun. :)

Post that info, I might order some myself

i was able to get a very large firesteel from ebay about 4" x .50 thick, the thing will throw a spark like youwont believe, infact the darn thing kind of sound like a small sparkler goind off in your hands when you strike it. I can light a piece of paper towel and newspaper with just one strike. I havent had the same luck with the smaller firesteel. Unfortunatly the darn thing cost me a liitle over $20.00 for it hence the search for other sources. thanks

Well whoever get's ahold of some first let us know, I'd like to have one of those larger steels myself.

I checked them out before posting above, however they only go up to 1/2" diameter of sparking goodness! :D

Guys,

I know it's China, but these guys can deliver almost every size of firesteel.

Good luck!

Yep... like you said GOOD LUCK! I tried to contact them a few times while I was seraching for the best bang for the buck on ferrocerium rods and never got an answer. Seems like this guys sell in BIG bulk quantities. It may work for a store or someone who wants to sell them later on in smaller quantities, but not for 99% of us who only need/want a handfull of them. You will be better off dealing with www.ferrocerium.com or eBay.

I bought six of the 100mm x 10mm rods (eBay) and I guess they are big enough. I will keep three of them (the other three are for friends). I am drilling holes so I can secure them with a lanyard. I don't know if bigger rods will perform much better than these ones.

Somehow I thought they would be harder... they wear out quite fast!

Mikel,

I don't know what the problem is with jxmetals at the moment, but I allways got a reply. Mostly the same day. The guy who answered was very helpfull, and friendly.

Those ferrocerium.com firesteels probabaly come from jxmetals too. They are a bit softer then the original LMF, but they throw very good/hot sparks. But I still think the LMF are the best spark throwers by far.

Drilling a hole in them, can be very "exciting" if you don't keep them cool/wet with water!! :D

I think these 10x100mm are the best size for firesteels, even more when drilled to hold a lanyard, which aids in holding the firesteel.

There is no need of cooling it off with whater. Just use a very sharp drilbit (which is tricky because they get dull quickly...) and a the slowest turning speed your drill allows. The faster you drill the more chances of getting the shavings to ignite. So far I have drilled three of them with a 2mm drilbit but I broke the corner of one of them when I was about to finish the hole. Next time I will try with a different setup.
I will try to post some pictures of them (my camera is quite crappy... BENQ DC500, so don't expect much of them).

When I drilled them, I just put on some goggles, stayed away from highly flammable stuff, and enjoyed the show!:D:thumbup:
