Super Large prototype Spyder: The Bison???

I love the new Police G-10, it's basically an "urban sword". Perfect blade size for self-defense purposes or camping, but handle could be shorter, though. I'll be using mine as a meat slicer at barbecues...

I love my Police and carry it every day. But, it is not the perfect size for self defense. A short blade slashes well. But, for thrusting into vital targets, you need at least a 6" blade.

That being said, I carry the Spyderco Police because no large blades on the market right now can be accessed quickly and reliably one handed. That is even more important than knife size. Although, it would be good to have both size and deployment qualities in one knife.

Spyderco knives are, in my mind, the most ergonomic and quality knives a person can buy.

 Ummm, no. Talk to your friendly, local, Paramedics/EMTs and/or Corrections Officers (Been Those, Done That). 2-3" will get anything you want to hit, unless you're an anemic wuss, and the offender is pushing 500# of gut and flab.

If you want a large one-hander, the Cuda Maxx is still pretty much the only choice. Pricey, though, but capable of tip-up conversion and pre-waved. If the Bison has a cross guard/wave enabler and tip-up, i think I'll need one.

You may have to penetrate clothing and fat. Have you been to Walmart lately? Look at the average person. A 4" blade as a stabbing instrument would be absorbed by multiple protective lipid layers.

All good fixed blade fighting knives are long for a reason. Reach and penetration.

When I got to handle the Bison prototype back in 2004 I distinctly remember it being more of an outdoor type, big bladed folder which would be good for hunting and to some degree good for meat processing.

I immediately wondered how good the Bison model would be with a guthook. For those of you who got the perception that the Bison is an ideal self defense knife:confused: Frankly I just don't get it

I guess for all intent and purposes you could use any knife for SD but to me the Bison didn't stand out as one to me at all. But it did stand out to me as an ideal big bladed outdoor folder. And I hope I get to try one out someday so I can confirm that.

Speaking of long folders. That Camillus CUDA MAXX with the 5.5" blade also came in a 7" version called the MADD MAXX or something like that. I saw a couple of Darrel Ralph custom folders at the Blade Show that had 9" blades. When you open them up, their 1/2 a yard long.

I truly think that Spyderco could get a huge market share with a big bladed, outdoor folder. I truly think that the market would receive it well. Now I am a firm believer in fixed blades but I truly cut my teeth on a big twin bladed Ka-bar that had 2 blades that were both about 4 inches in length and they served me well for quite some time.

This Bison model would be superb for people that don't like fixed blades for whatever reason. This could be Spyderco's ultimate camp knife as well.

The police model is a large, yet easily carried model. Blade comes in at about 4.25".

Eric's "Resiliance" is about the same length in the blade, but not as thin as the Police. It's part of the "Tenacious" / "Persistence" family.

Laci's new model is a 5.0" blade.

If Szabo's model is already 5" why not go the full 5.5? Some states allow up to 5.5 but the ones that don't are usually around the 4" range which has already been surpassed.

Being the BISON is more geared for hard core outdoor field use I don't think blade length is really much of an issue.

Because here in Missouri I've gone in many local cafe/dinners with even fixed blades on me during hunting seasons and have never had anyone say anything to me about it at all.

A big outdoor folder would sure enhance Spyderco's line up for this upcoming fall deer season that will be on us before we know it. I would love to see a special sheath for the Bison with a place to also put a Spyderco "doublestuff" sharpening stone. It definitely should be offered with a Gut Hook.

While it sounds cool, for "hard core outdoor field use" I'll take a fixed blade over any folder every time.

Although this ain't Prac Tac, there are two words which answer this assertion:
Flesh compression.
