Super Sander

I also would like to see these pic's....I do still use my old 1/4 sheet palm grip sander only I go all the way to 1500 with it then a quick buff with scratchless pink on a loose buff then I hand rub the almost perfect mirror with what ever I want the satin finish to be.At this point the small fish hooks have all but disappeared and a little hand work makes a very nice satin over mirror finish...

I may be wrong, but I think Fred may have been referring to a demo that Fuad Accawi did using an inverted palm sander. He made short work of sanding a fairly large blade with that thing.

Here is a pic of the sander set-up that he had at Bowie's hammer-in in 2007.

Great thanks for the photo. I have that exact same sander. So I just need to make the dense foam holder and replace the platen with something like a piece of mycarta right. Jim

Robert,

You have saved my bacon, once again. Thanks
I can't find the photos I had taken. They must have been lost when the hard drive burnted up.

This set up has its place, I believe. But nothing I have used is an out right panacea. There are draw backs to ever set up.

The sander I made, that copied the unit Robert was kind enough to post, now sets on a shelf, gathering dust.
At present I use a combination of a disc grinder and a 1/4"X11/2"X12" mild steel bar, with the required abrasive wrapped around it, to do my finish sanding.
The bar is very effective at producing a nice finish and the lines all run in the same direction, which is a plus.

Good luck guys and thanks again my friend, Fred

Jim,

If I recall, Fuad was using a piece of "hard" rubber on the face of the sander. (I could be wrong here) I put a piece of fairly hard rubber on my sander and gave it a try. I was not impressed, and therefore, like Fred, my sander is covered in dust also.

I just use my platen and go from 60 grit through 400 grit, then start over by hand with 280 and go up from there. Lots of work, but I seem to have better control that way.

OK, I won't throw my hand sanding bars away. I have been thinking of putting a line of 1/4 20 brass machine screws in the backing bar I use in my knife vise, so I can adjust them to support the blade and help keep it from flexing as I draw my sanding bar down the blade

That has been my focus also. You can put a great deal of pressure on the bar which causes the blade to flex and that distorts the surface.
I have been working with wedges of thick leather to support the blade; that shows some promise.

do you use that for removing rough skin from your elbows

I know this is an old thread, but wonder...

Does anyone have the missing photos? Or know where I could look to see them?

I picked this idea up from a young man at Bowies hammerin this year.
They were using the set up clamped in a vise. I just took it a step farther
by adding the dampining effect.

This set up has cut my blade finishing time by 2/3.
I start with 120 sticky paper and work through to 600 on this sanding block.

With the 3" foam base and the foam padding around the block sander you elliminate all the vibration.
Well worth the time invested.

I think JT's post, one post prior to yours has a pic of the inverted sander mounted in a vise.

I guess the foam padding is missing in that pic.

Good on you my friend, for digging that photo out. That was a great demo he did.
