well i think this is a good old poll to bring up to date!

i was passing a booth and heard bg42 mentioned and said i like s30v and
was told better thie then me ...
many knife makers did NOT like it..
what do you like as a edc user or
as a knife maker?

i forgot to include as choices
bucks current steel 420HC
and my fav the old school 440C
so if these are your choices jest say so in your post!

I like the polish that ats-34 will take but there ain't no substitiute for the BG-42 Ole Pal!

Dave (with caffeine Thank You!)

I love them all as well!

BUT I voted for ATS34/154CM.
I have only used (extensively) 154, ats, s30v, 420hc...
S30V is awesome stuff but ats/154 sharpens a tad easier and holds an edge!
Also 420HC wasn't among the choices ;) (Bucks 420HC is a "super steel") :D

Like Jim, I have not used them all but I voted for CPM154.... absolutely love my BP110 with that steel!

humm i had tryed to add buck reg steel as a choice but it went to post instead,,,
i have a bg42 but have not used it...
truthfully though
i have a old 440 two liner i use edc now and likes it jest fine!
if i can edit the poll i will add 420HC steel and old school 440c to the choices!

I like all those steels and have worked with them but their not w/o maladies. BG42 and S30V will hold an edge longer because of their vanadinum content and (CPM's) manufacturing process. However, their hard to grind and won't mirror polish.440C holds an edge longer than ATS34 and has better stainless properties and more economical. Both will take a nice mirror polish. 154 CPM may be the best of both worlds all things considered. It's powder metalurgy allows great hardness and capable of mirror polishing and good stain resistant and only slightly harder to grind. Still, it comes down to heat treat and use. DM

I almost voted Damascus. The edge is great and easy to sharpen.
But went for BG-42 for overall as a "super steel". Hell, ya ever try to destroy a ball bearing?
420HC would be up there for me too...easy to take and hold a more than decent edge.

...Dave IMHO ya jus' can't do much better than BG-42. I never found 440C to be hard to sharpen and I don't find BG-42 any harder to sharpen either. Once that edge is in place it seems to stay there forever...:thumbup:

I voted BG-42 just to put something down, but I like CPM154 just as well. Truth is, I like them all.

I should add that its Bucks bg-42 steel i like so much ,some of the bg-42 out there is not in the same class as buck steel imho.

Well Decaff, I Like 440c,420hc,and 154cpm. Those are the only
one's that I have.I think they are all good.I don't have a favorite.
Jeff

I have a ag 110, the s30v drop point, a BG-42, 425M, 420 HC, 440 C. My edc is a 2 dot 110.

Welcome to the forum, 14Bucks! I voted for BG-42, but I like the 440C of my '2 dot' just fine.

Old School ROCKS!
many years ago i traided a worn 502 for a inverted two line with a chiped point, re-pointed it and used as construction knife for a number of years
...found it and cleaned it up and it is still an most excleant edc!!!
i find i still like that 440C simi hollow..

how many of you guys out there would want to try a
1968 440C steel blade in real use?

...That would be a really good idea Daverino...Too many newer users think the sun rises and falls on today's new "SUPER STEELS"...I love 440C and how it retains an edge and it's overall toughness. A number of my EDC's are 440C and I often lament the fact that Buck doesn't use it any more...:(...
