...That would be a really good idea Daverino...Too many newer users think the sun rises and falls on today's new "SUPER STEELS"...I love 440C and how it retains an edge and it's overall toughness. A number of my EDC's are 440C and I often lament the fact that Buck doesn't use it any more...:(...

Hey Doc D............I wonder what Buck does with the 440c blades
that come in to the and they send out a new 420hcsteel blade.
Do you recon.......They are able to melt it down and use it some how?
Jeff

...I seriously doubt that Jeff. I don't believe Buck has the facilities to do any steel reprocessing and I couldn't imagine the costs involved to do so. They'd need a lot of acreage as well...You'd be talking about an actual steel plant like Crucible or the old Republic and such. Sure would be nice to see that ol' 440C back in use though...

Fom buck I have knives with 420HC and ATS-34 only.I love ATS -34,but my favorite is Hitachi aogami(blue steel)from carbon steel, and vg10 from stainless.
I dont think is any steel can compete the hitachi blue steel from stainlees steels,VG 10 for me is quiet sim to ATS-34.
Guys do you know,Buck has ever used carbon steel in there knife?

I have a 110/U.S.A. inverted with a Brass rocker rivet I guess it's a fourth version... I've haven't tried it out yet... I Just bought it at the swap meet a few week ago... :D But My EDC is a 422OD 1984 that works great for me...:D:thumbup: I'm not sure about the steel... But I do want to try out my new old 110 this year, for sure... :D

...You're 422 is 425M and the 110 is 440C...Both are great steels as Buck does 'em...I do think 440C is the best though...

I like the S30V the best, but ATS-34 is a very close second.
I can get them both extremely sharp, and they seem to hold an edge for a good amount of work.
BG-42 is good too but I have a harder time getting it as sharp as the S30V or the ATS-34.

Note that when I say ATS-34 I'm referring to Buck's ATS-34....I have had some trouble with ATS-34 from other makers.

i have to say that i like the 3 dot 440C that Bos did the heat treat on..
but my current edc has 420HC and it works fine
i still vote all time fav as black damascuss for looks and light use!

BG-42 is a high purity double melt stainless that is used for rocket engine parts but not ball bearings. That is what 52100 is for. BG-42 is not a powdered metallurgy steel. That is why the Vanadium can only be added at the 2% level. The limited sizes and availability of BG-42 mill products limits its use for knives. It was not developed for knives. It has a coarser grain size than S30V. In my experience more Vanadium is better because the carbides formed are around 82 Rockwell c. The presence of VC in the blade greatly inhances its wear resistance. So I like S60V (440V) and S90V (420V).The amount of Vanadium in S 30,60,& 90 is 3%,6%,&9% respectively.

I voted for S30V.
But BG 42 is good too.
I will buy knife with the blade BG 42 in any case.
I know 440C steel, it is not so bad for knife s blade.

I vote Damascus blindly-dont have any, havent used any but they look gooooooood and everything I've read here on the forum says it gets razor and is a good durable user steel(which is hard to believe cause it looks too purdy)

I like them all but seem to favor BG42.
I don't know why that is but I do...lack of availablity probably.
I've been able to sharpen all these steels to my satisfaction on a Sharpmaker without unusual difficulty.

I voted CPM154, I only have it on my Bass Pro 110, but I think it is my favorite, with S30V behind that.

it is good and sharp!
i cut my self once with it
it is VERY toothy in its cut..
draw cuts very easily in most all things
it is not a shaving or push sharp steel
it can do it but others are better at it..
yes i can still feel its tooth-ness as i cut my self..
it was that sharp!

Thats the impression I would have of it, but I figgered it for a good shaver based on the comments-good info as always dave.

i like them all!
i like all steel of BUCK's because it was processed by BUCK.it is worth to trust.such as 420HC.

I remember my old 110,a 1972 seemed so hard to sharpen. It could have been me,but that blade lasted over 25 years of EDC use. ps (Flatlander, your right on about Judges,Lawyers,& Courthouses)!

I EDC a S30V and only sharpen it back to hair shaving probably once a month. It stands up to a thinner profile than some of the other steels without rolling the edge in hard use. It gets micro chips before it edge rolls but they just give it the "toothy" feel of Damascus....

440C used to seem so hard to sharpen as most sharpening was done on actual stone or "silicon carbide" stones. Now almost everyone has a much better set of tools for sharpening so 440C and the new "super steels" all became a lot easier to bring up to hair shaving sharp...
