Surely the time draws nigh...?

Actually, I have been thinking about how great this hawk blade would handle hanging off the end of a nice shaped 3D, D'Allara styled micarta handle.

Man, I just lurrrrvv the way that D'Allara grip feels in the hand...a fantastic user. Shame on Sal for dropping that beauty. :)

Looks great, is it going to be VG10 or ZDP189? Any MSRP info? I'd like to hear about a release date myself.

All I have heard are various rumours, Vivi. I wish i had more solid info myself, so I hate to speculate too much. I thought Sal dropped some specs in a thread once, but that was awhile back. Things seem a little under the radar regarding this knife of late.

I hope the final version has the same relaxed sweep to the blade profile as what the prototype picture displays. I would love to see the ball lock on this too...man, that is one smooth, confident lock. I could be wrong, but I somehow got the impression this knife was going to have carbon scales...I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

It's listed in the 2008 Retail Price Guide that Spyderco sent along with their new catalog.

SKU is C116CFP. Carbon Fiber handle and plain edge for a MSRP of $319.95. It's not listed in the actual 2008 Product Guide so this is all that I have to go on.

What you are looking at in the pis in fact ARE CF scales as far as I remember from handling it last year. It is just the same as on the CF Millies and the Stretch II.

I'm expecting it for the second half of this year.... I know some ppl on spyderco forums that can't wait for this one.... :D

a little crappy pic I took while I had the chance where you can see that it is in fact CF:

After a few glasses of wine I *might* part with $200 for a SuperHawk just because it's a Spyderco and you know it will be well crafted, but I would have to be a hawkbill addict to part with much more than that.

I dunno...

I mean, look at this little beauty...Kirk Rexroat design, a *real* sweet 3" fixed blade hawkbill profile, black micarta scales...perfect size, *superb* ergonomics and handling, a leather ambidextrous sheath...for under $120.

. Multiply the MSRP by 60/70% rule to get an idea of dealer pricing.

It's not in the catalog becasue it's not due until the second half of the year, these things are usually covered by a catalogue update.

It's a roughly similar profile, but there are factors to consider such as the Al Mar model not being a full flat grind, a different steel, and the fact it's a fixed blade which makes engineering a lot more easy.

To be sure, all valid points, swingshot. Was just hoping for a more moderate price, I suppose.

To be fair, they are different knives. The SuperHawk has a much beefier blade profile overall. The Al Mar hawkbill has an *extremely* fine entry, which I rather like, and which seems to be quite strong, though I have not abused it inappropriately. The SuperHawk's wider flat ground profile will have more resistance to tip breakage.

Just to be clear. MSRP for the SuperHawk is $320, the same as the CPM S90V Military (which is going for $200 right now).

Well, that being the case, I might be able to sneak one through just under the wire. :)

I really hate losing expensive knives, which is a shame, because I am beyond terrible for doing just that...at the beach, surfing, sailing, kite boarding, camping, climbing, in hotels...I even flushed one SAK down the toilet.

For a bit of background headroom; the Superhawk was sorta inspired by a lengthy (over 1000 posts ) thread about hawkbills over on Spyderco.com forums. After lots of hawkbill fan discussion, they came up with what they would like to see in a new hawkbill. Namely something very well made and very strong. Tank-like sturdy. Just about that time, Sal stepped in saying such a project may be feasible and apparently began the engineering. Although he didn't like the idea of a tanker hawk name, as that implies big and cumbersome, like a big oil tanker, or square and huge, like an Abrams tank. So the name became Super Hawk.

My input was for a purple handle, I see the handle will be black. :p

Whoa...a few brain cycles involved in the development, for sure.

Bah...probably just as well I missed the thread, then...I might have pushed hard for some hot paisley scales to go with my favorite kite boarding trunks. :D

Indeed. Makes the Stretch 2 suddenly more appealing. :D

MSRP's of $309.95 Stretch2 vs. $319.95 Superhawk
Looks like the street prices for the Stretch2 are around $175.... I'm glad I'm not paying "full retail" prices :) Carbon fiber never comes cheap.... G10 handles would save some $.... that Al Mar looks pretty sweet for the price even though its a fixed blade/aus8 steel

Too true. Maybe Sal will find it in his heart to offer some scale material options. To be honest, I can't really say carbon fibre scales hold any greater attraction for me than good micarta or G10 slabs...heck, steel lined FRN is a decent enough handle material if good steel is hung from it. I still like micarta for its smooth but yet grippy qualities.

...that Al Mar looks pretty sweet for the price even though its a fixed blade/aus8 steel

It's a nice blade...you can get it *really* sharp, and this Aus8 is pretty tough steel, which does not hurt given the extremely pointy character of the blade profile. This is one *very* stabby hawkbill. I have yet to cut myself with it, but that needle like point has pricked me on more than several occasions. And I can't wax on enough about this knife's outstanding handling and retention qualities...brilliant ergos. I want to get a nice secure kydex rig made for it so I can safely take it with me out on the water.

The Stretch 2 CF feels just like G-10 and you have to hold it just right in the light to see that it is CF. I'd rather have G-10 and save a few bucks at that point. Unless someone has a good argument that CF is substantially better performance-wise.
