SuperHawk...wherefore art thou?

I'd rather have G-10 and save a few bucks at that point.

Yup...me too.

Unless someone has a good argument that CF is substantially better performance-wise.

I like carbon fibre materials for go fast applications like high performance sailboat/windsurfer spars, foils, hull layups and such...very strong and light, dramatically cuts down on weight. But for knife scales, I don't see it as being a super big deal...more of a "Look at me...*I* have carbon fibre scales!" sort of thing.

I know nothing about the knife business, but I doubt very much whether many SuperHawk sales would be lost if this knife were to sport cheaper G10 scales, and perhaps a slightly lower price point might convince the fence sitters to open their wallets.

I'm getting one to carry and one for the collection...if any of my buds want to get one, I'll have to order them one after they're on the shelves.

Considering it will feel just like Spyderco's version of G-10 and you can't tell that it is CF unless you hold it just right in light, and that it adds to the expense, I just have to ask Why?

Besides whatever other reasons there may be, I prefer the peel-ply CF over the G-10 primarily because the CF has little grip bumps rather than having the epoxy removed from the fiberglass matrix as in G10. The CF has an overall smooth feel and does not shred pant pocket fabric like the blasted G10 which is the equivalent of sandpaper IMO.

Well...now that's certainly true, I'll give you that.

Funnily enough, the one good thing about boring old Zytel is that you can texture it so that it has good grip retention properties, and yet still have it slide easily in and out of your pockets.

diffrent strokes? :yawn::D

After handling both the G-10 Military and a Carbon Fiber one, I think the CF gives a slightly noticeable increase in rigidity. While I do like it for that reason on the Military, I don't think it's necessary on the SuperHawk.

Also, I find the peel ply CF on the BG-42 Military to be way rougher than Spyderco's standard G-10. If the SuperHawk is done similarly then it will eat pockets even faster.

I might be confused, but Spyderco has put out at least three versions of Carbon Fiber, the slick shiny CF of old, the "peel ply" that was seen in sprint military a mix of some grip and a bit of CF visual appeal, and another version that I believe is in this Superhawk and is also in the Stretch 2 which is very grippy and is only distinguishable from G-10 if you hold it in the light at a certain angle.

What chew talkin' about Brian? :p

I realized it probably came down to the intangible personal preference, I was fishing for any other reasons. I'm still trying to find a reason for the more expensive CF if it feels and basically looks just like G-10. :)

Yeah zenheretic, I know what you mean w/the Stretch2.....I prefer the texture of the TMag/zdp Caly3 because it feels "tangibly" different than Spyderco's G-10 ..... handling the Stretch2 in the dark i figure most (including me) contestants would say the handle was G-10 ;) Now, if only there was a way to make G-10 have the "look" of carbonfiber :yawn::p

Well, what do ya know...VG10 steel, and G10 scales after all that. Looks like it's going to be wide in the pocket...good thing I'm used to the D'Allara. I really think that hawkbill shape is well executed...not too hooked, not too moderate. Ergos look great, too. It's just...well...beautiful.

Nice job Sal, and company.
