surface grinders--WHAT FOR?

its funny because i got a plate stuck on the surface grinder the other day using tape and could not get it off. i then had to find help to pry it off :(

BTW- Ryan, there are enough different stones to make your head spin.

There are many types, many shapes, many sizes, many grits.

Typically you have a diamond pointed dressing tool that you mount on the magnetic chuck... then run the stone over the point to dress the stone.

Mine easily goes from belt to stone, but I rarely use the stone. If I was a better machinist type, I'd use the stones for more things than I do. :)

Marekz, in my opinion that's over priced. For your average knife maker that would work fine but if your laying 3g on the table you can do a lot better.

Look on ebay. 3 phase surface grinders go pretty cheap on there because a lot of people don't have 3 phase. I bought a great condition kent kgs-200 for $550 shipped. It just needs a vfd and magnetic chuck. Total cost ~1,200; new cost $6000-$8000.

A couple of guys have bought the relatively inexpensive Grizzly,HF, etc surface grinders and converted them to a 2 x 72 belt setup. From what I have heard and read, a surface grinder is pretty much a "must have" tool if you want to sell damascus billets to fellow knifegrinders and a "should have" tool if you are making folders.

well i dont have 3 phase. im just trying to get an idea of the value of owning one. sounds like you got a great deal!!! im thinking--do i really need one as a part time novice. I might look into building one.--thanks much--marekz

The point is that you don't need 3-phase. A VFD converts single phase 220 to 3-phase and gives you variable speed to boot.

This is what I did with my 3 phase. As a bonus I can turn it down and grind slower if I put the abrasive belt set up on it anyway.

I paid $300 for this one about 4 yrs ago, also got about 30 wheels with it.
It's an old Brown&Sharp w Heald magnetic chuck.
It's a belt drive machine and after the belt broke someone stuck a half hp motor on the back. Works for me.

Phil, I have one of those, and it totaly doesn't work! I make sure I have the paper positioned correctly, I place the work piece against the flat, and no matter how long I hold it there, it doesn't get flat! I've even stacked weights on top of the work piece to increase the friction, but it's almost as though the thing's not doing any work at all! Really frustrating. I'm not even sure how it's suppose to work anyway as there isn't even a plug.:confused:;)

You fasten sandpaper (tape or glue) to the surface plate and "lap" the workpiece by hand.

WHAT you mean ill have to brake a sweat??? I have my limits when it comes to knife making!! i quit. thanks for the clarification-.lol.--marekz
