surface grinders--WHAT FOR?

Actually, I've seen makers use lapping machines to set up flats. It's basically a flat disc set up horizontally with a retaining ring around it and some stationary dividers that separate work pieces and keep the pieces in the same basic position while the disc spins underneath slowly.

See THIS picture for an example.

I might have to try and rig up a similar setup with a flat disc at some point and see how it works on smaller parts and blades on a smaller, "southern engineered" scale.

I have that 18X24" granite surface plate! :)

If you are going to sand on it, I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you get some of 3M's feathering disc adhesive (available from Tracy). You can put down a piece of paper and have it held with a steel grip.... then peel it off and put down a different piece. And when you do need to clean it up, it comes off easily. :thumbup: :)
