Survival equipment ponderings

Runningboar, no, I didn't say that right. I was referring to others who said they could kill a deer or a polar bear with a .22 LR or something similar...and I may have misunderstood what they were trying to say...unless it was an extreme survival situation, I personally wouldn't try to use anything less than a maximum effective round for a quick clean kill.

i recently bought a savage arms .17 hmr. deadly little thing. i've been trying to find a deer to kill with it but havent seen one this year. i've got a leepers 6-24x50 long range scope on it. from what i've read this bullet will travel up to 2700 fps which is really close to a much larger caliber rifle bullet. very accurate, i enjoy it. only thing i dont like is it didnt come with iron sights. at close range my scope is way too powerful. anyone know about any other stocks i can put on this? i've checked with the manufacturer and they say they havent put anything else out, i know 22 mag magazines will work with this gun, maybe 22 mag stocks will work too?

The bullets for this cartridge are extremely frangible. They will do a number (think red mist) to a squirrel sized animal, but are likely to create a nasty, but superficial wound on deer sized game.

I have killed maybe 200 hogs and 30 head of cattle with a .22, granted that was at near contact ranges, but with a steady hand, they are DRT if you do your job.

When I take deer off my dads orchard, ( if you can call 22 trees an orchard, the state of wisc does, but its a stretch) a .22 and a bright flash light mean a dead deer. longest shot maybe 30 yard, but usually less. Deer drop fast when you head shoot them. When i was a kid, we killed a lot of beaver with .22 head shots if the traps did not kill them. i had two 9 shot .22 pistols, break top old H&R's, and a mossberg USGI .22 that killed a couple of tons of meat and skins.

A .17 for DEER? that's just crazy. In WI there are laws against using mini or micro calibers on deer, etc., and there's a damn good reason for that. There are also laws against shining deer at night, I'm SURE that's not what Guntotin' fool meant in his post.

From the WI DNR site, 2006 guidelines...
Rifles:
• It is illegal to hunt deer with any air rifle, rimfire rifle, or any center-fire rifle less
than .22 caliber. (That means YOU GTF! :) )
• Any .22 caliber or larger center-fire rifle is legal to use to hunt deer in areas open
to hunting deer with rifles.
Handguns:
• To be legal for deer, handguns must use center-fire cartridges of .22 caliber or
larger and have a 5 1/2 inch minimum barrel, measured from the firing pin to the
muzzle with the action closed.

.17HMR was designed to for a flat trajectory over long distances, not to take down an animal 100# or more. You're trying to drink whiskey from a bottle of wine, secretagentmann007. Shooting anything larger than a bunny with that thing is probably illegal, certainly dumb and irresponsible. The sort of behavior PETA and anti-gunners just LOVE to hear about

Just my $.02 of course, but I think .30 cal is needed for deer or larger. (That would include .270, basically necked-down 30/06.) I don't know anyone in central WI who hunts with smaller calibers, except for youths and "recoil-sensitive" folks who like a .243. On the other hand, not too many people use .300 Ultra Mags either... most folks like some venison left after they kill the deer , lol.
