Survival is the subject less than $100.00 for a great knife is the budget

I can't imagine a more middle of nowhere location than Manhattan Island (NYC) :D and certainly the knife you might choose just might be a little different from one you take to the Blue Ridge Mountains of NC or TN. I am totally lost in the really big cities. But at least you won't starve to death unless the world had gone to do do. In which case, the Sawyer filter might come in handy.

It may have been said already, but the knife you pack in your BOB pack and your preparations for such a possibility that matters. A jack of all trades type knife master of none would be practical, I think anything with a 3.5 - 5 inches drop point synthetic or stabilized handle. Or just a plain Mora and SA. Now, if your preparation is more specialized in the environment where you live or like to travel too, then you can choose what best works for you, such as a machete or larger knife like the Junglas or BK 9, or even something Condor makes. Just two cents for thoughts.

Too true; the concrete jungle is an unforgiving place LOL... ;) I grew up in the country and am more comfortable in the great outdoors than where I am now which is on the outskirts of an area of 6 million plus people. Not as big as NYC but still crazy IMHO how many people are not prepared for anything really. They think it's somebody else's responsibility to look out for their well being LOL.:foot:

With that in mind; I've been toying with the idea to build some of these little kits to supplement what I already carry daily:

I'm with the Cold Steel machete or a Becker BK-15. But I always think I'd want a good shovel.

Yup, to me a good knife is just part of a survival system; I'd hate to have to only rely on a single tool or be separated from all the other gear I have at my disposal LOL. :foot: Just MHO.

Old pic of this Waterstoneblades maiden voyage on a five day trip including an oldschool folding shovel and my favourite hatchet.

The knife was so shiny then and had no scratches. ;)
