Survival Knife Based On Price/Quality Point ??

BabyJWuu,

Right now my woods survival kit consists of a SwissBianco Bushcrafter, Skookum Bushtool, Swamp Rat RatManDu, Baco folding saw and a Leatherman Wave.

I can take them all or any combination .. or just two ... but I always like to have a beater and one that stays sharp.

I'm trying to save energy and be smart.

I don't chop down trees or do much batoning.

I keep my bivy sack and sleeping bag in good shape and on me all the time in the back country.

Most of my fire wood comes from breaking branches.

I consider my firearm the weapon.

Brian

Get a RatManDu and SwampWarden while they are still in the store.

You wont regret it. Best deals out there and they feel like super expensive customs!

Hi,

I am at the Swamp Rat website, but there is virtually no information on their knives. What is the steel, size, etcetera? No sheath??

For your interest, here is a beautiful dagger :)

Cordially,

BabyJWuu :D

The steel is SR101 ... 52100

Holds an edge great but not stainless.

The RMD is 5.25" to the handle and 10.25" overall.

They are semi custom and run in small batches.

Check out their sub forum in the manufacturers section .... http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=778

I live about an hour from Nordic knives ... It is an amazing place !!!!!

Not to p-ss in your corn flakes, but are Marines actually using that?

Hello! It's called a USMC Survival Knife. A knife company wouldn't just put "USMC" in a knife's name unless the USMC used it.

Same holds for "gov", "spec", "ops", "tac", "escape and evasion", etc etc etc.

Get yourself an Old Hickory skinner. They cost 8 or 10 bucks, and they will do everything the more expensive knives will do. I carried one in western Brazil (Mato Grosso and Para states) for months, using it to clean game, fish, hack and chop, etc. It is a light weight knife, inexpensive, and extremely tough. At times, I found myself 100's of miles from the nearest settlement, and I never thought that knife was not up to the survival tasks at hand.

A zombie such as yourself knows that better than anybody! :D That Extrema Ratio must terrify you! More brains!

MMmmm Italian Steel, er I mean brrainzzz. :D

Truth be told I have a soft for the ER stuff, N690 is a tough steel. JUst the ergos on them usually stink.

Did you urban survival?

Let's rock!

When you say "survival knife" do you mean big, black coated, quarter inch thick chopper/sharpened prybar great for bashing the bejeebus outta stuff?

Or do you mean an edged tool a wilderness living expert might use?

Nothing wrong with either category....just wondering what you consider "survival."

There are a number of different survival knives available Marcinek.
I have a few.I never bash with them, but I suppose if I needed to in order to survive.
Little off topic,Does Buck make any survival knives?:jerk it:

"The Fallkniven S1 Forest Knife is probably the best hunting, fishing and survival knife ever made."

Its sturdy blade made of the new extremely strong stainless laminate VG10 custom steel is convex grounded for extra strong cutting power with no risk for edge breakage. The modified clippoint design works well for penetrating purposes, the long curved edge is ideal for skinning. The blade is long enough for lighter chopping and won´t break, it´s full 5 mm (0.2") thick!

The checkered handle gives a good grip even when your hands are cold or wet. Depending on your needs, you have the possibility to chose from two kinds of sheaths, an open-top dangler in thick, black leather or a zytel sheath with snappers around the handle.
Like all our models, the S1 Forest Knife is well tested before release, you will find no teething problems. If your looking for total quality, a classic knife from Fallkniven AB, is never wrong. Try the S1 Forest Knife, you won´t be disappointed!

Total Length: 9.7"
Blade Length: 5.1"
Tang: Full Protruding
Weight: 6.7 oz
Steel: Lam VG10
Hardness: 59 rc
Handle: Thermorun

When we put that together, it was the ad copy from Fallkniven. :)

Everyday is urban survival! Honestly, short of some "I Am Legend"/Zombie urban scenario, the most effective urban survival tools are a charged-up cell phone, about a hundred bucks in cash, a washcloth (incredibly useful!), and a Leatherman. That's enough stuff to get me back to "headquarters."
