survival knife review

Mistwalker it seems more and more obvious with each post you make that you're a plant put here by Taylor Cutlery.

It's not a blatant knock-off, it's a blatant built-off as it is built off of the CRK design. The handle is a little fatter which will be more comfortable for some and less for others, the tool kit in the Schrade is not quite as hi-tech, fancy, or fashionable as that in the CRK's it's just your basic magnetic extension, some bits, and a plastic caddy.... nothing that isn't available in other tool systems at a hardware store.... that happens to be perfectly functional in it's intended role. Everyone should know the grind lines of the blade are different because as Chris himself even said he left as much meat as possible at the tip for added strength for rough work while this knife has more ground off at the tip apppearing to go more towards better penetration. It's not like CRK invented knurling, nor the threaded butt cap, and serrations have been done to death. The phrase "knock-off" in and of it's self implies a cheapened copy. While the price may be lower this is not a "cheaply built" knife. Many knives that sell for more won't take as much. Beside look at Busse, he wasn't the first guy in the worl to make a slab handled leaf shaped knife, a lot his knives exhibit variations of design features in previous knives by other people such as Marbles and Randall. To me the FAT FBM looks like a flat ground SOG Tigershark blade on steroids mated to a different handle. There are only so many ways one can vary a blade or a handle. I think the fact that they did remain so close to the original design could be taken as an admission of respect for CRK.

You go beyond simply being clueless. You've engineered the most convoluted stupidity imaginable to excuse your ignorance and lack of integrity.

Maybe tabeeb762 is correct, and you are a taylor cutlery shill. It wouldn't surprise me- Just the kind of slimy behavior I would expect from that POS company.

No wait. . . He is correct. You are shilling for those scumbags.

This is one of three new S&W designs that will be in the upcomming 2009 catalog that I have been sent for and testing and reviewing by Morgan Taylor of Taylor brands. They are three new models of Smith and Wesson knives; SW4 a drop point, SW5 a tanto point, and an SW6 a recurve. I am also testing a fourth knife at this time

I simply chose to use a portion of the tests to illustrate an occasionaly needed bushcraft skill because I was impressed with this knife's toughness and ability to function in this capacity. I also happen to like the recurve blade design for some other bushcraft tasks such as cutting points, stripping bark...and the weight of the blade made the spine a great tool to crack black walnut which are MUCH tougher to crack than their english counterparts. However while the knife is tough as hell, after hacking on that fatwood stump a bit and splitting the fatwood into pieces, and then beating the crap out of it to force it through that nearly two foot section of seasoned oak six times the handle scales loosed a bit and it would not shave after, but I'm not yet sure if that is because of a lack of edge retention, or because it was coated in pitch and sap but I have forwarded this information back to Morgan.

What a dirtball. :thumbdn:

The plot thickens!

I've played with the CR knockoff...it's ok for the money but it's such a blatant rip-off that it makes me sick. Personally I wouldn't trust anything by Taylor to save my life. And it's NOT carbon.

Rat Finkenstein.........I for one am not interested in folks that post insults and name calling, I am not on the forum to pass judgement, I enjoy the review of knives and new information that I learn from others here. It was a good review of what seems to be a good knife, pure and simple. Why does it have to turn into a pissing match over the design, or if someone is pushing a particular brand they may like. I say, with all due respect, read the review, or don't.....no need for insults.

Bye the way, nice link on all your posts to buy your knives?

Sorry, I don't chime in much, but this type thing gets under my skin....again, not trying to slam you, just my two cents worth.

Perhaps if you did chime in more you would feel more a part of this community. And as such, you might understand the anger many feel when a company shill comes here and inundates these forums with "advertising" for said company's knives, no matter how well disguised as "knife reviews" these ads may be.

Mark.....thanks for the generous welcome, and lack of chiming in does not dilute my knowledge or understanding one bit, my point was anger or no anger, there is no need for name calling, period. If that bothers you, then I apologize.

Thundermoon,

Perhaps you have a point regarding the name calling, however, that said I must say mistwalker is not the first company shill, if that's what he is(which I believe to be true) to be put here to influence a good discussion with an obvious bias. It gets pretty old after a while when one is part of a community which one cares deeply about.

A question if I may, please: What was the point exactly of your comment highlighted in bold above regarding Rat's knives for sale?

Anthony

He may be a shill as you guys call it, but the point is I don't know that for sure, and even if I did, I wouldn't support name calling. It is nothing at all personally toward RAT, I have learned a lot from his various post, and I'm sure I will in the future, it was not meant as a slam to him personally. My personal opinion is that if mistwalker is doing what he is accussed of, I don't think he would make the mistake of posting more knives that he was sent to test. Just doesn't add up to me, my gut tells me this was, and is, an honest post, he mentioned in his original post that he had contacted the company, maybe they hit it off and wanted to send him some more knives to test so they, the company, could get his feedback.....doesn't seem to far fetched to me.

I didn't mean to upset the applecart with my response, just don't like name calling, especially via a PC. I am confident RAT understands what I am trying to say, and I hope he understands it was nothing toward him personally, or as a person.

Oh, sorry almost forgot to answer your question about why I mentioned the "knives for sale" just seemed a little like the kettle calling the pot black, keep in mind I said just a little, not nearly to the extent of what we're talking about, it was, just to me, like saying (without saying of course) that the knife mentioned is crap, but here are some worth buying. I know it was NOT intended as such by any stretch of the imagination, just didn't seem to go with the current picture that was being painted.

MAN, I should go back to not chiming in so much, huh! I see all you out there nodding your heads yes.......insert smile here!!

Ivan51. Still a nice thread. Too bad some had to ruin it with there inflated egos. Really nice review thread though.

Just thinking out loud, and please know I could be WAY wrong, wouldn't be the first time trust me. But would a true undercover shill post that? Or would someone that thought what they were doing was truly innocent?

I'm going back into my hole now......

wait a minute, wait a minute. did Chris Reeve design the knife in First Blood? if not, then HIS knife is a blatant knock off...

I sell knives occasionally from my personal collection. In case you didn't notice there is an exchange forum here where supporting members can sell things. Supporting members also get to have nifty sig lines.

I am not sneaking around making spam posts about knockoff knives to generate interest in a POS company.
If you can't see the difference, then best to just keep your hands clear of that keyboard.

I do not come to a forum to shill for anyone, much less a disreputable company. You don't like my opinions? I don't like dishonest shills, unethical POS companies, or the people who support them.

"Not on the forum to pass judgment"

And yet that is exactly what you did to me.

Hypocrisy at its finest. :D

Oversimplification. :thumbdn:

There's a huge difference between having features that are found in other knives (i.e. serrations, pocket clips, choils, etc.) and knives that are an obvious replication of a preexisting design.

Example:

Benchmade Presidio

Boker Magnum Skyscraper

I think it's easy to say that it's more than just "inspired" in this case.

When using thick blades for kitchen use technique becomes more important.

I have used some old thick Busse knives in the kitchen and done just fine.

Remember when using thick knives that slicing works better than push cutting and working from the outside in slicing works better than chopping in half and then quarters then eighths.

While I much prefer my Murray Carters in the kitchen, I practice the thick blades in the kitchen and the yard as well because I like to get a clue how a knife will work before it ever makes it into the field.

RAT..............did I pass judgement on you, possibly, but if I did I sincerely apologize, it honestly was not my intention and I tried to make it perfectly clear it wasn't personal toward you.

Now for the personal part: I'm a big boy, I don't need you or anyone telling me to keep my hands clear of the keyboard, if you can't handle opinions other than your own then that's your problem, not mine. Intimidating or condesending talk does not impress me in the least. Why this has turned into a pissing match over a review that someone did is beyond me. I suggested that name calling was not appropriate and I stand by that......I offered my opinion on a public forum, not your forum, or my forum....a public forum.

Finally, someone who thinks with their head and not their....ego.

Well, I've been asked this same question in one thread and I replied. Did the askers respond to the reply? No...they merely decided to plaster the same question in other threads that I've posted...therefore I'm posting the original question and my answer everywhere it pops up and maybe at some point they'll stop carrying on long enough to read it.

Based on this statement and your subsequent shilling of other Taylor brand knives, I must wonder what exactly is the nature of your relationship with that company?

Well…I have no real relationship with Taylor LLC other than that of a pleased and inquisitive customer who wrote to tell them so and to ask some questions. I wanted to know what kind of steel was used, and if they had any intentions of making a shorter version or other variations of the extreme survival knife because, while the E,S. is definitely a tough as nails knife, a 7.5 inch blade is a bit much for EDC carry doing research in the bush. Also that as tough as this knife was a shorter one would in my opinion make for an even stronger knife by allowing less leverage on the blade when prying or digging which I tend to do a lot of in the field. I walk for miles in the bush and I like to limit how much I take in as I am always bringing things back out for use or study back at camp or back home. I like having a shorter stout knife that has a thicker than usual blade which gives it the weight to chop like a larger knife. For the last several years my EDC fixed blade has been and still is my SOG Bowie which is as always right here beside me. Morgan Taylor wrote me to say thanks for my response. In the return email I mentioned that I had done a short review on the E.S. on a wilderness site that I write on to share what I had learned about it with some friends. He , I assume, read what I had written, and then wrote back telling me of some new knives coming out with shorter thicker blades and asked if I’d be interested in checking them out in the field and giving him some feed back. Naturally I said of course. The demonstration shown in this thread was done with one of them yes, but is by far no knife review. The material in this thread is given as a demonstration of useable, and possibly even life saving wilderness skills which mentions specific attributes of the type knife needed and attributes of the knife used. Those attributes mentioned would apply to any knife of similar make-up. This just happens to be the one I used at the time. If you are interested in a review of this knife I will go ahead and tell you now as I have already told Mr. Taylor. That the blade design is very tough and good for rough work but the clearance holes in the tang and G-10 handle scales are a bit over-sized causing the handle scales to prematurely loosen. And that the edge retention of the 440 stainless wasn’t as good as the 1095 used on the Schrade knife I had been testing for possible future carry in emergency kits. Now having said this it is only fair to also add that I did beat the heck out of just the very tip of that knife while pushing on the handle with all the weight of my 6'-2”, 260 pound body. A lot of more costly knives would have fared no better. And in response to my input, Mr. Taylor said he would see what could be done to remedy these problems. I am still evaluating the knife but it’s really not for me as an EDC. But it is a damned good beater blade to keep around.

Just to mention one fact. I own SOG knives and a CRK. I have written to both in the past and waited over a week just to get a reply from some lower ranking desk jockey that actually knew little about the questions I was asking that never got answered to my satisfaction. It took till the next day to get a reply to my letter to Schrade.

By the way, I don't intend to argue semantics with the maturity challenged but I'm not on Taylor LLC's payroll (I'll be sure to let you know if that changes) and I mention the good and the bad as I personally see it, and in any case the plural doesn't apply.

Anyone offended by Rat Fink, don't worry about him. He came across as being a bit brash when I first encountered him as well, and I was new to this site (and the internet in general) at the time and never thought anyone could be so rude and ignorant in an environment I was told was friendly; bladeforums. I have since learned to ignore this man, and I suggest all others do the same. I certainly do not mean to insult Mr. Fink, but I have read many of his posts and still have yet to find one constructive comment from him. While I am sure he is a fine fellow, he just needs to brush up on his manners, and perhaps offer some positive comments rather than the seemingly ritualistic insults and snide comments.

I don't like dishonest shills, unethical POS companies, or the people who support them.
So now I gotta add CRKT to the "list" of "unethical POS companies"?
Puhleaseeeeeeeeee.............

I noticed someone ALWAYS has to chime in with patent infringement concerns on this board
Never any solid proof like patent #'s or anything like that
Just "it looks A LOT like so and so's design"............

Let Chris Reeves sue Taylor LLC if he wants

Thanks for the review Mistwalker
I don't really like the screwdriver thingy
I'm sure I could find something else to put in the handle though

I kinda like the S&W SW4 urban camo knife in your other thread:thumbup:

Having people tell me what not to buy makes me want to buy them even more

Everyone is so afraid of shills
Shills have no effect on me..BTW
I am shill proof!!!

Isn't the owner of Taylor LLC a member here on BF?
Why not just ask him if he paid Mistywalker?
Instead of speculating on who and who isn't shilling?
