Survival knife TV commercial

Hell Im 14 and I had one! (when I was 8). I never knew the compass screwed off and I was doing some light chopping and the blade flew off the handle revealing matches and fish hooks. I mounted the blade on a cedar shaft as a spear and put a plug in the end of the handle so I had a "survival kit" with a compass on it.

Well done! You had an equipment failure, adapted to the situation, and made the best of what you had left. That's what it's all about!

Did not even look at the thread but I had one too (30 years old)!! $13 in Saskatchewan when I was 12-13, actually chopped not too badly, too bad my cousins stole it from me and sold it for dope! I actually miss the throwback! Still have the "survival kit" as well as it was found when my Mom sold her house and gave it back to me!

I never had one- I was holding out for a Lile. ;)

Never got one of those either. :(

Losers!

I had the REAL DEAL.

Yeah, that's right, the Rambo, First Blood Part II knife!
At least it was fairly good steel (440C) and I got it sharp as hell. Never could figure out how he broke barbed wire with the back of it though. Hell, it's probably a colletor's item now, I even still have all the original supplies in the handle, still wrapped in celophane or whatever it is.

If your between 30 and 40, then probably most of us here had one....whether WE admit it or not! :D

PS, I had the cool camo one!

Heh. I'm 41, and I think I was just old enough to think Rambo was just entertaining Hollywood make-believe, and never wanted, or got one of these knives.

Massively entertaining commercial, though. I love that kind of ephemera.

I wanted one also, until I read about the original Randall 18. The saw teeth were designed to rip through the aluminum skin of an aircraft fuselage and the hollow hande was for a couple of doses of morphine and some water purification tabs to hold a crewman over until rescued. The Rambo movie did however spark my interest in knives in general not only as multiple use tools but also as a functional art form that I still enjoy today. If I had a kid and he wanted a hollow handled knife, I'd buy him one in a heartbeat just to introduce him to a wonderful hobby on his own terms, not mine.

I'm embarrased to say that I too had one similar to this when I was around 10 or 12. Broke it trying to use the saw to cut down a tree to make a fort, I think thats all me and my brothers did back then was make forts, haha! Glad I've graduated to "REAL" knives since then though!

yep, my grandparents who lived in california and didn't know anything about the outdoors got me and my brother one. i could never put a good edge on it like my hunting knives so i never used it or carried it. but i still thought it was really cool!

it's interesting to see how widespread and popular they were - good marketing i guess.

Hey I used to make forts all the time as well. We used this local bush and built them in trees or on the ground. Of course, if you were building a fort it was always important to search and destroy any other forts you came across (never destroyed them while occupants were there). It was all part of the game - find a fort destroy it, build your fort where nobody could find it, otherwise they will destroy it.

My best one was an underground job in the bush that we dug out over a week. We lined the top with sticks, garbage bags and then covered with leaves and debris. Nobody ever found it, except when we had a full week stint of rain and in filled up with water....After that we we took apart the roof and recovered the garbage bags.

Sorry off topic - but fun nostalgia....

The line "the best selling knife of its kind ever sold by us" is a work of absolute genius!

If anyone wants to dig it up I posted a thread called "hollow handled survival knife confessions" awhile back about this.

The commercial is clasic.

oh my god I had the knock off version, when I was a kid they flooded the market with them.
I had a buddy who was a Rambo wanabe and he spent the 150.00 on the real john rambo knife at the time . This brings back some scary memories. The cops were going nuts cause every one was carring one to school scouts the movies . good times

You mean, we're, umm, supposed to stop making forts?
