Day 2 - Victorinox Alox Farmer _ I'm hiking so I have food and supplies. The little vic has a nice blade for camp chores and can open any packaging, cans, or bottles with ease. The saw works great around camp for a number of tasks. Don't forget the tweezers, screwdrivers, etc.

Day 5 - Survive!Knives GSO 4.1 (OR Lionsteel M4). My go to hunting, camping, fishing, outdoors, all around knife. I never venture into the woods without one of these. Both are M390.

Day 8 - ESEE Junglas! I can do small things with a big knife but not big things with a small knife. The Junglas is a great chopper and could easily be used to build a quick shelter, baton firewood, etc.

I'm sorry I was unclear, in no way do you plan on losing any knives, it just happened. So the point was you probably like all 3 but if you were to lose 2. What one would you not mind going first and so on...

You were perfectly clear, but it is still known that 2 loved knives are going to be lost and it's hard to choose 2 you love to be lost.
I have a few knives that I could bear to part with if I had to, but don't like them enough to have familiarized myself with them enough that I take them into the woods.

If you ask someone what they already take with them vs to choose 3 loved knives to bring for this scenario they would have to think about this more seriously.

Its pronounced "chimera" but go on.....

1. LM Skeletool, it falls, but it lives on a bit of 2.2 zing-it, so its recovered
2. Vic Farmer Gets lost because it goes in the wrong pocket. Recovered after 5 minutes of pocket dumping
3. Bark river Mini-bushcrafter. Probably didn't even get used.

I get what you were trying to do with the thread, as you may have noticed its a recurring theme that is hard to take seriously. It also doesn't help when you don't add an opinion yourself. And if I'm lost on day 8, it won't take them three days to find me assuming they start on day 11. Either the SPOT, Epirb, or bonfire is going to let them know where I am pretty easy. Welcome, read more, and try to stick to reality, hypothetical situations are very rarely taken seriously here.

I'll take the scenario in a slightly different way. I do not know what will happen and i do not own that many knives.

I would probably lose my most used knife first. On the second day, just as im carving a stick for fun going along a cliff suddenly a helicopter flies up the cliff with a guy shooting a gun at me! i quickly throw my knife at him and the heli explodes. I am a cool guy so i didn't look at the explosion. I do not know if i hit him or not but i know i lost my knife.

The second knife would be a no name big beater blade that i have for fun. On the fifth day just as i was trying to baton some wood, the knife got stuck and a bear attacks our camp at the same time! We have to flee and leave the knife behind as we run 9 miles away just to be sure. Leaving me with the only knife left that i carry. A no name key knife.

Yeah i wish myself good luck with that... i might have to carry less weed

Yeah, the scenario is a bit ridiculous. If you want a three blade system for backpacking, ask opinions on that.

I have never lost a knife backpacking. As the other poster pointed out, your equipment becomes part of a system that you become very aware of and comfortable with. You find yourself packing and unpacking in order and usually double check everything.

But to stop being an a-hole and getting off my high horse to answer the question... If you are doing lots of miles (especially in mountainous areas) , weight and utility rule all. I would have:
1. A small Leatherman pst.
2. A rat 1
3. Since I need a third, I would toss in my bk23 or my Jarosz rambler.

I never take large blades on extended backpacking trips. They are too heavy and not a good weight / utility trade-off.

Um wait... what was the order again?

On which day do we lose our survival boots? And our survival tarp? And survival stove?

As much as I love knives, when I'm in the woods, I see my entire kit as a survival kit and losing any of it has consequences.

For me, a 10 day trip means that every ounce matters but, I'll also being doing some food prep. I'd take my standard PS4 Squirt (gear repair) and Opinel 10 Inox.

On trips where having a fire in a folding wood stove is a realistic possibility, I'll trade the Opinel for a Mora and add an Opinel folding saw. I carried the Squirt, Companion and saw on last weekend's trip. We were on skis but it was still backpacking. Morning temperature was 8F raising to mid 30s before noon. (For those who wonder, I used Special Blue over Silver Universal Klister and that combo worked in both the shade and sun.)

SAK Huntsman (or Leatherman Charge TTi).
Survive Knives GSO 4.1 (or Terava 110).
Skrama (or Silky Saw).

I don't lose kit as I'm x infantry and it becomes second nature to double double check before heading off, leave no trace. Anyhow, wouldn't matter as any of the above can make do. The Huntsman can do it, just takes time.

Well trodden trails then there is little reason to take the above, a good folder should be enough though I would take the Huntsman too as they are good for personal admin (cutting toe nails and cutting plasters for blisters).
Real off the beaten track then generally its a team effort so could take more between us. Someone with a Skrams, someone with good sizeable Silky saw, and someone with a spade.

1. Meecratechy chinese clone because it would be fun to throw a clone off a cliff. Clowns too but that's for another story.

2. Any Busse MOAB. A shame to lose but let's face it. If you lose one of those you're probably too drunk or stupid to own one in the first place.

3. Mad Dog Saxon Short Sword because my inner mall ninja would shout out , "I'M A BADASS, MOTHERFUCKA!"

Something along the lines of "Rank your top 3 knives to bring on a 10 day backpacking trip" would have made a metric ton more sense, honestly.

I mean if 1 and 2 are going to get lost, then I'd say

1) Plastic cutlery knife
2) Popsicle that I eat and then sharpen the stick
3) Vic Farmer

...except that I just use the Vic Farmer.

Really it pays to think these scenarios out first before posting.

One is attached to my rucksack so thats a bummer, have to head home.
One is attached to my belt so my pants might fall down and if on my way home I might get arrested.
One is on a lanyard attached to my pants which means that to lose it I'd be losing my pants; which is fine if I'm at home and the wife's feeling frisky. However, as she probably thought I would be away for a few days she might not be quite so happy to see me back so soon.
