Hey guys, Im trying to rig something up that I can have a few esentials with me on a small pouch on the front of the sheath. What can I focus on here?

I'm thinking a:
whistle
Ducttape, rolled over a fire straw
Brass wire
Small fishing kit
solitare maglite
firesteel
mabye a few bandaids

What do you think?

from what i can see. a maxpedition with some malice clips would seem like a good container for the existing molle system on your sheath..

you've covered the bbasics, i'd suggest a small folder like an opinel if it'll fit, they are cheap and are great for delicate tasks

also a pocket map magnifier and/or a compass would be a good idea

I would think that for me a folding knife and firesteel would cover it. When I add too much bulk/weight, I tend to leave the rig at home. Maybe add a seperate belt pouch containing the other materials, like a mil first aid or decon pouch. The decon pouches are about the size of two cigarette packs and have a waterproof snap-top plastic container inside. You can move it around your belt until you are balanced and confortable with the position.

Yeah, I was thinking of a sak camper or something small, but a smaller knife and definetly a firesteel. I've got a light and fishing kit atacheted to the back allready, so mabye something small on the front to hold them.

Thanks so far guys, keep'em coming please.

I think I'd swap the Maglite for some little LED keychain sized model, & I'd add a one quart freezer bag & some means of purifying water. Include some 4 lb. line & #12 hooks for tiny fish & some 10 lb. line and #8 hooks for panfish. Otherwise, I'd say you're on the right track. Keep the whistle! Maybe add a tiny compass & mirror, though.

Im almost thinking of just attaching an old gerber sheath to the front. Putting everything in that, would be neat and tidy.

Dude, get some little squirty bottles, the plastic ones, and put in some iodine, bug be gone, and some antihistamines and asprin in a little pill box.

Here is what I came up with. Looks like crap but it works. Still gonna mess around with what I want to put in.

Hey Guys..
Folny..

an old Leatherman or Gerber pouch would be perfect....

Not to nit pick or anything :)

But why put duct tape over a Firestraw ??

What happens if you need the firestraw before the duct tape ??Better wrapping it flat...

Nice set up BTW

:D, it actually was an after thought. I had the tape rolled over the straw and thought hey, im gonna stuff cotton in it.

I tried this out side and to be honest it worked as well as it looked:o

So, I opted for a good sized leather pouch. Works alot better, plus im not cramping the look of the sheath.:p:thumbup:

I carry a metalmatch (fire steel), a piece of pitchwood, vasline cotton balls, a small keychain light and some 550 cord. Should I get seperated from the rest of my gear I can make fire and shelter. Because it is not a lot of bulk or weight I don't notice it on my leg.

Same knife different sheath. Okuden A-7T with a pouch my buddy's wife made added to it. Not as rommy so there are no cotton balls in this one.

You may also want to consider something to keep the knife sharp. Like a small piece of ceramic rod or sandpaper.

I try always t base my kits on signaling, fire, shelter , and water, food being the last priority...you got the signaling& fire covered..maybe some tinder? some extra cord would be handy for shelter making, maybe a small filter, or some purification tabs I don't know, Nice kit though.

Yeah, its certainly still in production. I need to pick up a few things, but keeping it in a belt kit beside the knife will spead the weight out, and make it a little more accesable.

robert that thing is huge!

but also appealing in a sense... haven't been a big fan of drop leg rigs.. but that one looks quite nice. did you make it yourself?

Mike,
The loop was fine but I decided that I wanted to carry more than just a steel so the pouch was born. I actually got the idea of carrying it over my shoulder from Bear grylls water bottle, and the few times I have had it out I like it. I use a small D ring to clip the sheath to a belt loop with the cord over my shoulder so the kinfe is readily available and can be worn in multiple positions. Chris
