Survival Quiz

Very interesting but its scoring system is somewhat bogus.
I had to see answer again and clicked the button then I saw
my score rated 34 points, saying natural born survivor. (actually, it was 17). :)

I got 19. I disagree with the Bic lighter being better than matches. You ever try to use a Bic lighter with a wet wheel??????????????

Impossible. I prefer waterproof/windproof matches.

Exactly. Also, ever drop a lighter and lose the wheel? I've never irreparably damaged a flint by dropping it.

I got 18, but I read the large knife/small knife question wrong.

I got 16

#11: Cell phones are useless most places I go (even home). I have much better rescue chances witha big fire.

#12: I find waterproof/stormproof matches both faster and more efficient than a Bic. For lighters, I'd much rather have a cigar lighter, as it burns much hotter.

#16: I can do a hell of a lot more with Fish hooks, matches, twine, a swiss army knife, paperclips and a bottle of water, than I can with A cell phone, knife, plastic garbage bag, and a Bic lighter.

#18: Conserving energy is good, IF you are rescued fairly quickly. I'd rather look for sources of food while I'm fresh and strong, rather than weak from sleeping for days and it's now a real emergency.

Dude that thing is screwed up. It said I got 0 but when I cross referenced my answers I got most of them right. WTF?

17/20

But really, I consider it more of an indicator of some basic wilderness know-how. I'd stake personal practical knowledge from experience over this test.

Here in my country for example, climate-wise dying from exposure in three hours is very unlikely (unless you're atop the very highest peaks during some storm!)

As you Yanks say; there's more than one way to skin a cat!

14. Upon finding yourself in a dangerous survival situation, the best thing to do is:
a) React immediately, and start doing whatever you think will help to take your mind off the situation.
b) Start a fire to warm you up and signal for help.
c) Remain calm, take inventory of what tools and information you have, and then prioritize your actions to meet your most important needs first.
d) Sit down and then bend over so that your head is between your knees. Keep bending until you can kiss your ass goodbye.

Hahaha

I did that one at work the other day. I only missed one. I don't agree with his answer on #13. I don't think you NEED a big chopper.

Same result.

16/20 and now I know how to kiss my own ass :)
diagreed with three of the 'wrong' answers...

Exact same thing here...19/20. Although chopping is fun, it is far from being a necessity for surviving...

This city boy got 19/20, and "missed" the same question. I really don't see how much trailblazing you're going to be doing in a survival situation.

 the whole how quickly can you die without food messed me up, i put 3 days and it said it was supposed to be 3 weeks

I got 20 out of 20 but only because I spent half the summer studying for Nursing boards and learning how t o pick the best of obviously wrong answers. :)

 the whole how quickly can you die without food messed me up, i put 3 days and it said it was supposed to be 3 weeks

The irony is - if you are capable of kissing your own ass goodbye, then you probably only have only 3 days. If your arn't capable of this then you have the full 3 weeks :D:D:D:D

I got all 20 correct BUT!!! I don't agree with several of their answers and several could have been correct with several of their options IMO. Like a few others I answered a few with what I thought they wanted to hear. I don't agree with the large blade answer partly because They give no clue as to what constitutes a large of small blade. To me a large knife means eight inch minimum blade and I don't think anyone really needs a blade that big to survive. Give me a Vic Farmer and I won't die because of lack of knife, That I know for sure.

Well according to the online test, quiz etc. I should be dead by now. Crap, 40 years ago some of that stuff did not even exist. I don't know how I have made it in the woods, found water, cooked food, chopped stuff up, made fires and all with an old pack, old canteen, old boy scout knife, wool jacket, leather boots, tarp, rope, a few other things I have around the house, regular food, and a brain to try and figure out stuff. Maybe I should get modern. But all this old stuff and my mind are still working so I guess I'll just keep on going for a hike and enjoy myself.

I only got 14/20 and the ones i missed were all bogus , or so i feel.
1.i put little or big knife makes no difference
2.i choose water proof matches instead of bic
3. i choose the most useful survival kit, the one with out the cell
4. i put 3 day w/o food because it said the quickest you can die
5. i put 3 days for shelter, im pretty sure i missed that
6. and the only answer i agree that i screwed up on is i put any fish or reptile instead of any 6 legged insect or small furry animal.

:D but on the bright side now i know i can survive 3 weeks with out food cutting down on grocery expsenses.

I guess I'm just like everybody here...I figure I know more about wilderness survival than whoever the quiz authors are, on the basis of the provided answer.

I am from Canada and in my experience there are quite a number of situations in which exposure can kill you in three minutes (although I knew three hours was what they were getting at.) Consequently any list that puts building shelter ahead of building fire is potentially wrong...

Also you can get cell reception in approximately 5% of this country. If I am anywhere I would consider "wilderness" I probably haven't been able to place or receive a call for hours...before I pulled off the highway!

I have had good luck with bic lighters but I don't think they're anywhere near as good as either matches when you need fire NOW and that's the definition of survival firelighting IMO (although again I figured they wanted lighter. But what they want isn't very important to me!)

A big knife can do anything a small knife can do...only poorly. A small knife can do anything a big knife can do other than chop, and in most cases do it better. There are uses for both, so in my opinion this is one of the few instances where size doesn't really matter much.

Anyway good enough for people with no experience I suppose but no dice for the knowledgeable people.

You know that story about the class and crossing the stream and walking out of the desert reminds me of a number of experiences I've had - specifically in the department of philosophy at a university in Quebec which eventually decided giving me a good mark was less of a headache than continuing with trying to throw me out of the school - the book says a particular thing and it doesn't matter if the book is wrong. That's the answer in the book and regardless of what proofs you give on the error contained within the book, you got it wrong.

Never mind the fact that you went and looked up previous editions of the book, and they had changed the both the question and the answer in each of the last four editions (I assume because of professors writing in to complain or argue about its meaning.)
