Really a 20 ga? I can see the perks, however most people I know who carry on short trips will bring their side arm (whatever it is) & just a .22 rifle. I have actually been kicking around this question a little myself. I am a big fan of my M4, but not the best for a survival rifle. I had been thinking of carrying my little bolt action .22.

The great thing about a 20Ga is its good for small game and it still has enough energy for defensive use with buckshot. Recoil is much more managable than 12.

I sell a rosi 410/.22 combo and 20g/.22 combo for $119.99 OTD with a $20 mail in rebate.
i have sold 4 in 3 days. they come in tan, black and pink

I held the Savage 22lr & 20 gauge over & under this past weekend, to heavy.
I'd go with either a single shot 410 or 20 gauge

saw a rem 22lr/410 over under today but they want 360 for it. I would pay that for an springfield m6 but not a rem. BTW look up the springfield m6 it is sweet

Take a Marlin 981T. It's a bolt action tube feed .22 LR. I love mine, and it's rugged.

look at my screen name and then guess what my recommendation is going to be.:D

I personally would take a 12ga and my standard loadout of ammo that has everything from birdshot to buckshot to slugs.

A 20ga would most likely work just as well but I don't own one.

Marlin model 60 would be good or if you can find a used nylon Remington 66 that would be great.

I think that a .357 or .44mag revolver would offer you a lot of flexibility as well as ease of carry. With either of these two versatile rounds you could actually carry 4 different types of round with you such as with the .357mag you could take along shot shells (small game), .38spl (small game), .357mag (med/lg game and personal protection), .357mag Buffalo Bore (lg game & Bigfoot protection). The .44mag offer similar versatility with the various .44spl / .44mag rounds. The ammo doesn't weigh a lot so you could pack an assortment.

I am a fan of Ruger handguns so my personal choice would be a GP100 or Redhawk with a 4 in barrel OR a Blackhawk if I was in a SA mood. I would favor a chest rig for carry either.

Sounds like a enjoyable and educational trip. Be safe.

model 60 or the takedown version, the Papoose. Two days I'd haul extra food for, the rifle's redundant until you need it. Pretending will make you unhappy.

+1 on this. My father in law had a BlackHawk in .357, with an exchangable cylinder that was 9mm. He could shoot .357 mag, .38 special, 9mm, and .380 auto out of one gun.

Of course, it got stolen.

I would like to be able to eat the rabbit after I shot him

I love my Ruger 10/22, and count me amongst those who would like to see someone design a "survivor" stock for the thing. My god, I have a hundred different options if I want to turn it into a Mall Ninja carbine with folding-stock and a half dozen different toys dangling from it - but no one wants to utilize it as an emergency rifle?
