I'm looking to do one this spring or summer. Does anybody know of any good ones in the Mid-Atlantic USA?

I've seen a few offered on here but only up in Canada and such....

I googled it but couldn't find anything within a few hours drive. Thanks!

Right on the Canadian border in NY state is one of the very best survival teachers out there, Mr. Marty Simon - who posts here as Oldman/Marty.

Look no further: http://www.weteachu.com

Ah, I see you are in WV. It is worth the drive.

not that up state NY is all that far for me but Brian or anyone else here know of any in PA?

Not to derail the thread, but how about some in CO that aren't BOSS... I really want to take a WLC course, but don't know how it will translate to the alpine woods/desert climate that I currently live in.

For me you gotta go up to Marty or head further south. PA isn't that far from CT, though - come up April 26-27 to CT for our wilderness gathering, and you'll get a taste of Marty and Kevin's instruction. You have to travel a bit to find any good schools.

If you're into pseudo-Native American spiritual fiction, which is a bunch of pieces of stuff from books repackaged as Apache Shaman stuff, you can try the Tracker School with Tom Brown in NJ. He is very good at skills and tracking, but you may want to ignore the spiritual stuff, the Grandfather/Apache Elder fantasies, and all the 20-something neo-hippie kids there for free love in their tents -- it may be noisy at night in the camp.

raindog, the very basics of survival apply in all areas. I learned out on the East Coast for years, and then when I made numerous trips out West to your area, I felt very much at home.

I would come but the weekend before 18-20th I'm shooting the Philadelphia Tattoo Convention for Savage/Tattoo Magazine. And I think the little lady would show me some of her knife skills up close and personal if I were gone for two weekends in a row.;)

Thanks Brian, that that Winderness Learning Center is EXACTLY the type of thing I'm looking for. I'll have to do some homework on it - pretty reasonably priced too - maybe I could get a buddy to do a week with me up there as well. Thanks again.

midnite-penguin, you're welcome. After you research Marty's site, call him. He does this out of love for the way of life. When you talk to the man and ask questions in person, you will be convinced. He is a warm, friendly, no B.S. kinda guy.

He is the genuine deal, both as an expert, and as a human being.

That sounds great, It's a little late now(2am here) so maybe I'll give him a ring tomorrow after I read over it some more. I'd like to know what exactly I'll need to bring other than clothes/knife/sleeping bag.

Thanks again, maybe I can swindle my parents into paying for half of it or something =)

Brian,
Thanks for the redirecting. I have a few weeks out on the east coast this summer, I think I'll sign up for one of his shorter classes. Thanks again.
Dave

You're welcome, Dave. This thread has me started on a post I'll make soon about what to look for in a good survival instructor/school, and what bad signs to watch out for and avoid.

Hopefully, that will help folks develop the "eye" for what's real and what's not.

I'm sorry, Rob, I cannot agree with your recommendation of John McCann.

There are many reasons why I won't recommend him, but I cannot be more direct: In my opinion, you should steer clear of this man and his school.

Boys, for what it is worth. Marty will be holding a "Southern" class in NC the first part of April for those who can't head up to his NY classes. All information is posted on his website. Anytime you can get Marty Simon and Ethan Becker in the same camp, it is worth checking out.

BTW, my disagreement with Rob's recommendation has nothing to do with Rob. He knows, as does everyone else, that I have the highest regard for him.

I informed Rob privately of my reasons for not recommending Mr. McCann, and he was previously unaware of that information, and I believe he nows understands and agrees.

And I think it is classy of you not to gossip here. Kudos to you Brian!

Brian,
I would really like to thank you for all the nice things you have said about me and my school. With over 41 years between my military career and running the Wilderness Learning Center I think I have the experience and the knowledge to put on a really great school. Besides that I really do love what I do and enjoy it so much. This school is the culmination of a life's work studying, practicing and living wilderness survival. I am very fortunate to have this 537 acre piece of land up here in Northern NY that is ideally suited for what I do. Besides enjoying my own land me and my wife get to camp in many different places because we are also licensed guides and in that capacity we travel with a lot of nice people to some really great, beautiful wilderness areas in this great country of ours.
I would also like to add a comment about this forum. It is without a doubt the best survival forum out there and I do enjoy reading and participating in it. I can't wait till the April skills gathering in Connecticut. It will give me an opportunity to meet many of you face to face.
Again, I would like to thank you Brian for your great comments.
Oldman/Marty Simon
