At the CT. Wilderness Gathering Marty showed us this survival kit and I loved his idea and admired his ingenuity.
I really wish I had taken some close ups and an "exploded" view. The idea behind this is (Marty if I get any of this wrong please correct me with a verbal thrashing) the importance of having items with you at all times that are hard or impossible to create on your own in the woods. So in this kit he has a small A.G. Russell fixed blade (Woodswalker??), a firesteel, a compass, signal mirror, fish hooks and a small LED flashlight (hope I didn't forget anything?).
Inspired by Marty I put together this. It needs some tweaking, i.e. lose the twist tie and rubber band
) and some additions but its a fun little project.
BRKT Aurora
Compass with wrist strap
Maglite Solitaire
Firesteel and striker
DMT Extra Fine Mini-sharp
The DMT Mini-sharp is arguably not an essential item, there are plenty of ways to sharpen a dull knife in the woods, but for an edge-obsessive like myself I would get driven to distraction
if my knife didn't have at least a scary sharp semi-polished edge.
Thanks Marty for sharing your experiences and ideas so freely.
