My wife informed me not too long ago that in addition to the Fallkniven F1 she ordered for me, she also ordered one of Survival Sheath Systems belt sheaths for me. These were for a trip to Arizona that I had to cancel at the last moment due to wife's poor health and subsequent hospitalization.

First, the trip was coming up quickly so I called Mr. Humelbaugh and asked if the sheath could be expedited. I was thinking maybe he could get it to me in a couple of weeks...he must have done the work while we were talking on the phone because it arrived two days later. Where else will you find service like that?

Second, if you've ever talked to Mr. Humelbaugh, you'll understand this: don't call him unless you've got time because you'll find yourself engaged in some of the best conversation you'll find around. Here's a guy that knows what he's talking about and gives it to you straight. I ended our conversation thinking that if the sheath he sends me is half as nice as he is, I'll have the best sheath I've ever owned. When the sheath came, it was even nicer than I'd hoped.

Third, I have to admit, I wasn't a big fan of Kydex and I have to admit that my wife was right...again. The sheath that I received is everything I've always felt that a sheath should be, nothing it shouldn't be, and a few things I didn't realize one could be. Retention was excellent but the draw was easy (how the hell does he do THAT?). The sheath is sturdy, puts the knife exactly where it will sit most comfortably. The workmanship is obvious and excellent...the seams are invisible and it actually looks like a single piece of kydex along the edges. Only time I've ever wondered if the sheath will outlast the knife.

I'm jealous! What a wicked combo. I'd really, really love to see some pics if you get a chance, of both the blade and the sheath.

Yep. Loving my F1. I made it a little kydex sheath too. Good stuff.

They were gifts so I never asked the prices. She's a bargain hunter so she probably got a deal. I know she said that she got me the F1 with the black blade because it was the same price as the regular. According to the website, www.survivalsheath.com , the price was 49.95. Well worth it, in my opinion. Wow, there's a lot of cool sheaths on there.

She got mine in OD Green. OD has become kind of a joke between the two of us. When we first met, I was using a Kel-Tec P-11 as a crotch gun. I'd gotten it cheap because it had an OD frame (this was back a few years when everybody wanted tactical black and nothing else). She fired it and said she wanted it. I did an extreme carry bevel job on it (wish I'd done that before I carried it as a crotch gun), and gave the slide an OD Green Moly treatment. She named it Kermit, as in the frog. Wanted to do the same thing to a P-32 for her, only in pink, and name it Miss Piggy but she'd kill me if I did that. Anyway, she used it as her primary carry until she decided that my .45 really looked better on her hip.

How's your wife doing?

You have to look after a woman like that!!!!!!

Doc C,

Thanks for asking after her. It would be easier to list the health problems that she doesn't have but the chief complaint is moderate/severe Crohn's Disease with accompanying bone, soft tissue, and vascular issues. This last week-long visit, they determined that she was also hypertensive and tried her on a medication that shut her kidneys down...whoops. So they tried her on something else and sent her home...24 hours later she began to have chest pains, difficulty breathing and her extremities turned blue. Back to ER, where the doc, this little pissant who, in the past, has made it clear that he equates Crohn's pain with drug seeking, determined that this MIGHT be a drug reaction.

Anybody who reads this: If you have a bad experience with hospital staff, call and complain...loudly. If you have a good experience with hospital staff, call and praise them...three times louder than you would have complained. The good guys need encouragement.

Stepping down from soapbox now.

She feels like she needs to take care of me because ~two years ago, I began having seizures of unknown origin. The doctors are still stymied but they promised that, if they don't find a cause soon, they'll name whatever I have after me...so I've got THAT going for me. Would I rather be immortalized as a syndrome or a disease?

Sorry to hear about your wife's health problems. I hope things get going better for you folks. I have a chest rig from www.survivalsheath.com for my F1, and I love it. Excellent fit, finish, and utility. I will try to put some pics up.

TFK,

What sheath did you get from Survival Sheaths? The one he designed that is called the "Survival Sheath" is a nylon sheath with pocket and kydex liner. The one you seem to be describing sounds more like one of his custom kydex sheaths.

I have a the nylon model on order from another retailer because I wanted to get a drop leg attachment at the same time. They don't seem to be in any hurry to ship.

Okay here are some pics of my chest rig and F1. The only way I could figure to take a pic of the chest rig on my chest was in the bathroom mirror so I apologize for the crappy pic. I have it set up to ride right under the sternum strap of my pack. It is comfy, and close to hand. Oh ya, and the last pic I just couldn't resist showing you guys my elkhound doing her dead cockroach pet my tummy impression.

Number one thank you, Task Force K. I remember you well since we shared the wonderful memories of the Gore family outings and the resulting friction with the military working dog. (Never put the military, an attack dog, and the friends of Al Gore together everyone, not a good combo) I'm glad you dig the sheath, and I must say, your wife is a saint, and I hope you both feel better.

I have a back sheath for mr SRK made by survival sheath. It's an awsome sheath system.I'll be doing more business with them in the future.

Hey tfk.

Despite my name, I'm not, so I am of no help there, but I wish you both the best and I hope that things work out down the road. To have those kinds of problems and still be concerned about making her husband happy, certainly speaks to her character.

All the best, bro, and keep us informed.

Everybody,

Thanks for the supportive comments regarding my wife. I'd really like to keep this thread focused on these sheaths and I apologize for my little rant yesterday about physicians...just needed to vent and should have chosen a more appropriate venue. I apologize if I sing her praises a little too much but I'm lucky to have her. I'm lucky I caught her at a moment of low self-esteem: I'm not saying that I'm ugly...In fact, I'm one of the better looking, one-eyed, hunchbacked, pot-bellied midgets you'll ever meet.

My wife got me the simple belt sheath...she knows I've got a KISS mentality and usually keep my pockets stuffed with enough gear to restart civilization, but those full-on Survival Sheaths with the pouches definitely bear taking a look at.

Mr. Humelbaugh,

Don't thank me, let me thank you. I'd like to discuss a sheath idea with you, sometime. I should probably send you a drawing but the gist of it is:

A sheath that incorporates the properties of a pancake style and a paddle type sheath where the knife is on the outside of the pants and the paddle forms a holster for a small revolver. It probably sounds a little crowded and a little complicated but I trust that you'll consider it fully before telling me that it's impossible or ridiculous.

Guys,

Mr. Humelbaugh is former EOD, so if he ever offers to play "Operation: The Wacky Doctor's Game" for money, you'd be advised to turn him down. Seems he applied that same attention to detail to his sheathmaking.

I'm still working on getting those pics posted.
