i know that im like the thousandth guy to post something like this but i've been wondering about a good camp knife or survival knife, i've been looking at the Fallkniven F1, looks really nice and is a superb blade so i've heard, i already have a Spyderco featherweight and a Benchmade 140bk(its going to Afghanistan with a friend) and those might serve my purpose, in that case i would just have to get the F1 cause i want one, i don't need an Emerson mini comm but i wanted one so now i have one kinda thing.

do a google search and include site:bladeforums.com

there's not much anyone can tell you about the F1 etc that hasn't already been said.

when i think SURVIVAL knife i automatically think SAK or multitool.

look at the SAK one handed trekker.....or a swisstool spirit.....or LM wave.

if you want to supplement it with a Falkniven that would be fine also.

When I think survival knife I think of a big high-quality chopping knife.

I wouldn't want to cut wood for a shelter and fire with an SAK, multitool, or 4" blade.

well at least he didn't say; "Tactical!" (god bless him :D )

the F1 is really a great blade bitter, you won't go wrong with that,
and you'll probably get a whole bunch and that would be a great
one to start out with, good luck.

with a SAK or LM...you dont chop the wood...you saw it. same results.

same results but 10x the time and effort. get the F1 or an A1. i agree that a multi-tool is great in a survival situation but if i had to choose i'd take a good fixxed blade instead. having both would be ideal. i wonder how well the diamond file on a leatherman would work for sharpening, i imagine it would give you a rough edge, but thats better than a dull one i suppose.

I'm sure the Bark Stream guys will chime in
Trent votes for a Camillus survival knife...

what do you actually do with a knife when you camp now ?

what is the scope of your survival skills ?

these have a bit of a bearing on the kinda knife you will be suited for , IMHO

I vary what I take where according to the situation and location ... its not much good taking a machete to the desert , nor a lot of good carrying only a folder when you got to cut a path thru jungle ...

just some thorts

I think the terrain you plan to be in determines the "best survival knife". In my past years, [old guy now], a knife 3- 4 inches worked the best. A machete works well now in Florida.

Yes, down in South Georgia or Florida, a machete, a SAK, and maybe a decent locking folder is a good combo.

Well, Les Stroud, the Canadian host of Science/Discovery channels' 'Survivorman' uses a lowly $34-$37 at a discount house US made Buck 119 on some adventures - and a multi-tool all of the time. This guy sea-kayaks to a survival site along the Alaskan coast line with 55# of video camera gear to film his 7-day no-supplies ordeal. He makes do. For many adventures, he has just that multi-tool. In the Panama jungle, he tried to cut too-thick of a water vine with his multi-tool's knife - slipped - and cut a finger to the bone. He should have had a larger separate knife - like his 119.

For years, I thought a Buck 110 was all I needed. Now I have 192 Vanguards, 119s, etc - and a selection of other 'bushcraft' knives from other vendors, including five from Bark River alone. Great knives - as I am sure the made-in-Japan F1 is as well. Simplicity - and effectiveness rules. Visit Wally World - get a 119 - you'll be out ~$36. If it isn't 'enough' - you can take me off your Christmas card list!

I recomend a BUSSE FBM ...much tougher than the F-1..and around the same price:D

i would try out these five items,

1. a swiss army knife, i like the one hand trekker but any model will do.i like a saw blade on my saks-- the trekker, fireman, farmer and a bunch of others have saw blades. you will find it usefull.

2. buy a 12 inch machete- i just bought cold steel barong and kukri machetes, i like them both, the ontario or any of the cheap machetes will do.

3. a multitool, there are a lot of them, some folks like them a bunch, i carry one all the time, great for moving things around a campfire.

4. a swedish army knife, best 11 bucks you will spend.

5 a small axe/hatchet

with all these items you can decide what suites your style of camping as far as the toos you need to get stuff done. go use them.

next hang on these forums, hoodlums osf, this forum and you will get a lot of information and the more knowledge you have the better you will get at selecting your equipment. its not the tools it is the knowledge that you have and the attitude you have that gets you through a rough situation.

I know its not quite what you asked for but I would recommend a survival trio. This would consist of an axe for chopping. A small 4" fixed blade (an F1 would do nicely) and a folder, sak, or multi-tool for fine work.

If you've not got terribly much experience with these sorts of blades, I'd recommend getting something basic, but quality. Then you can determine what you want and don't want in a general purpose field blade and spend some more green later. It kind of hurts to spend a day's paycheck on a knife that you end up not even liking too much! Of course, if you've already been fooling around with field blades and found some preferences, probably time to go for it!

Mora 510 + Vic Farmer + Fiskars hatchet/Ontario or Tramontina machete (optional) = Enough steel for most any task

The Farmers can be had on Amazon for under $15 if you take your time, and the 510 is only $10 from Ragnar at www.ragweedforge.com .

After some dirt time with the Mora, you can decide about Fallknivens and Bark Rivers and RC's....

Just my two cents!

For the $ I would get my self a good machete (CS khukuri machete ) A good fixed blade 3"~4" (Frosts Mora of Sweden - Clipper /carbon steel or RAT Cutlery RC-3 or 4) & a good multi tool (Leatherman WAVE ) & a SAK. These blades should get you thru just about anything

It is not even worth the effort, there's a better chance of sharpening your knife using a stone off the ground.:jerkit::jerkit:

Lots of good advice. I would go inexpensive at first. I like the Farmer, Mora, Machete Route. You could substitute a Leatherman Multi for the Farmer, and a Small Kabar or Pilots Survival for the Mora, an axe for the Machete, etc.
