survival type knife

it doesn't get much better than the fallknives F1.... also check out bark river's BRAVO 1....

If you only can choose one knife I would recommend the Fallkniven F1 or S1 or similar size Bark River. With the zytel sheath with the sharpener glued on it.
If you can choose a small kit, I would say a F1, a Bahco folding saw and a Leatherman Fuse (or similar)

A survival knife should not have the abilities to chop, then you might be tempted to abuse the knife more than necessary. It should also be light and not too big.

I would strongly advise against the Gerber LMF II. I have no idea how the designers were thinking, but my LMF II has so far caused a five stitch cut and a number of near accidents. No other knife I have has needed that much force to be pulled out of the sheath. I still wonder how many soldiers who has cut themselves or other with this knife.

Falknivens are good looking knives, but for what I see them selling for in the US (I have seen the big knives goign for over $400 discounted), you are getting into custom territory where you can come up with a knife of your own specs.
Edit...the cheaps ones aren't that pricey, but if you want something like the Odin, you are talking $300 and I would do ya one like that for less....lol.

SOG Seal Pup has never let me down, split wood with it (used like a wedge and hammered it with another piece of wood), swam with it, dug trail latrine, cooked, ate and cleaned animals with it and still holds it edge with no rust... I am hard on things and have put this knife through the worst I can and it has always come out the same way it went in with me... sharp and sturdy.

Dont forget to consider the RAT Cutlery line up if it's a fixed blade youre after. They come with the best factory sheaths that Ive ever seen, and Jeff and Mike [of Rat cutlery] have absolutely top notch customer service, you'd be hard pressed to find a single person who has something negative to say of them, I certainly havent come across any.

Some purists put down the SOG Seal Pup, with its zytel handle and AUS-6 steel, but they are easy to sharpen and rugged. I like the plain-edged Elite even better.

Take a look at Busse on the exchange here. Not cheap, but quality never is. Best warranty in the business and it is practically indestructible. They hold an excellent edge despite whatever use/abuse you can throw at it. The steel is really unbelievable.

Shhh, don't let my wife know!

Actually, I have but two model #192s, a 420HC user and an S30V 'Alaskan Guide' variant looker/user. Great feel - quite useful - but the cheaper model #119 Special is also a great feeling, as well as cheaper and easier to find, knife for typical camping/survival knife chores. While Buck has it's share of imports, these guys are made in the USA.
