yep yep yep, dat be deh one an only

man...one time I mixed moonshine with jack at a certain "chestnut mountain proving grounds" I was looking for my orange (actually Green) tent all night. Sigh...

This year I'm going to get back at those bastids......

"meade"shine style

HEY Joe you finally got around to starting a batch of mead:thumbup: It gets better with age
I have some pumpkin mead that I started to dump at 4 months. I didn't get around to it now at a year it ain't half bad
Oliver winery makes a calelot mead that you can buy that is decent
Good shine is as smooth as any fine sippin' whiskey gets warm as it goes down, and slaps the hell out of you when you stand up. If the stuff you guys are drinkin ain't you need to find some one who knows how to make shine right!!! Bad shine will kill you, Good shine will hold it's own with any high quality spirit you can buy

I've heard that they still run across old moonshine stills a few miles from here over at Wilkesboro, NC... there are a couple of places that they call the moonshine capital of the world, and that place is definitely one of them... it seems like everyone I know who visits the place always comes back with a jug or jar of the stuff... and some stories of near-death experiences... :p http://www.savethespeedway.net/history1.html

It was crystal clear and tasted smooth...just kicked my butt the next day. I don't drink much anymore, and when I do, it's usually just beer. This was another dimension!

I said stupid things, and acted like a fool. :D

The only thing better than good moonshine is sharing it with a good friend. If I ever make it to one of the gatherings I'll bring enough to share. I gave some to a friend of mine when we were at the beach fishing last month. His response was "what the Hell was that" then he asked for another drink!

My grandfather was a shiner, and I learned a thing or two from him, made my own fair share and helped my son make some too. He said the real trick is to keep everything clean, and make sure you don't keep the "light or heavy ends", that meaning the toxins. Trace amounts of methanol will be the first liquid to leave the flake stand when distilling, throw it out. Then you get the ethanol, which is the good stuff. After a while of distilling, trace amounts of propanol will start to appear, so you want to stop distilling before this happens. Also, never use any lead solder, painted equipment or aluminum equipment, it makes toxic shine. A true nicely aged moonshine filtered through activated charcoal is wonderful stuff, and can pack a hell of a punch at upwards of 160 proof / 80% alc./vol. If shine is done right, it emerges as a neutral spirit (which is essentially vodka) and has almost no taste. As such, you can now purchase flavors for your neutral spirits to make them similar to rum or whatever your preferred hard liquor is. I have tried using different ingredients to make shine, ranging from molasses, corn, grain, potatoes, demorerra brown sugar and plain white table sugar too. Of all, the best result came from the corn, but the process involves adding enzymes that can be difficult to find. All process yielded quality moonshine however, which I preferred to have with cranberry juice or, oddly enough, root beer.

I had some on Saturday. Holy crap! One shot and I felt all tingly and lightheaded. I backed off and stuck with Abita Ambers the rest of the night.

Shine is evil stuff, truly evil. As for drinking suggestions- you just drink it straight, until you go blind (hopefully temporarily). That's how you know it's working.

I find the key to handling my shine intake is to remain standing as long as I keep drinking,

…once I can’t stand anymore I sit down and stop drinking…

…when I can’t sit any more, …I pass out.

In the morning, I find a brisk hike in the mountain air helps to sweat it out,

…I like to follow that with a hearty breakfast.

Well, …it works for me.

Another test used for moonshine is to "proof". A small amount of gun powder is poured in a dish with the moonshine. It is ignited and if the mixture starts to flame it is "proofed." In other words if it lights then it contains a good amount of alcohol, but if it does not flame the moonshine has been diluted

That’s an old test. You put a pinch of gunpowder in a metal spoon and added some swamp shine or other distilled liquor. Dip your test spoon in cold water, not so deeply that you wet the gunpowder-booze mixture. Apply flame. If the gunpowder fires off, you have some "proof" or "full proof" alcohol. This test will work with a liquid containing eleven parts pure alcohol and ten parts water. In Brittan, that's what "proof alcohol" means. Canada uses the same system. In America 100 proof liquor contains fifty percent alcohol by volume.

Actually Canada uses % alc/vol as opposed to proof, however, the translation is the same as in the States, where 100 proof is 50% alc/vol. It is chemically impossible to achieve 100% pure ethanol though, since pure alcohol instantly soaks up moisture from the air much like gasline antifreeze does. ;) Just a neat side note.

I had some once from an old timer that was camping beside us on the river--Week long fishing trip and we had a keg of beer and some of those styrofoam beer cups. The shine ate the bottom out of that cup in about five minutes. I picked it up and the bottom fell out. I figured that I would just stick with the beer at that point--KV

Yeah..White lighting....goes down smooth as water with a hint of 10ft tall & Bullet proof and leaving you wanting more but the next day you feel like you been licking the dirt off the bottom of rocks and dragged across a dried river bed all in the name of a good time .

I´m a Swede, and as has been said good shine is nothing but Vodka, though very often drunk at 150-180 proof (75-90%) which sure hits hard. There are however no toxins, bourbon or scotch contains muuuuuch more of the bad stuff..

Brian, I see you need some Training Videos. :D

I've found the best way to enjoy it is surrounded by friends, sipping and passing the bottle, with a guitar passing along behind it.

Been close to thirty years since I had any 'shine. My head still hurts when I think about it. There was a really great show on the Documentary Channel a couple of nights ago called "The Last One". It followed an old boy named Popcorn Sutton as he made what he said would be his last ever batch of 'shine, from picking the spot for his still to the end of his run, and then breaking the still down.
