Survive! Skills, Tips, Tricks and How to's

Welcome kenash.

Love the thread, I'll get some shoots of my pocket fish kit later after work.

I'll try to get this one apart too so I can show it's contents.

Edit: Yes that is a birthday candle. A pack of .89¢ gag birthday candles make for another wet and windy weather fire starter. Just another trick to throw in the pot.

Yep, they work great. I usually pack a couple of the ones that refuse to be blown out.

Yes sir that's the ones, a nice cheap light weight throw in the pack and forget till you need it. They really have to be submerged in water to be extinguished too. Gotta have an open flame to get them going though, one down side, but once lit it'll burn till completely gone if need be.

The gag birthday candle is an excellent idea! I never would have thought of that. I'm going to buy some on my next trip to the store. Thank you!

I like the candle on cotton idea. Been thinking of soaking it in Vaseline (petroleum jelly) but I think wax is less messy.

If you look in my picture above at the wick end of the candle. There is a small white and orange 'straw'. It's actually a large pixie stick straw. I soak cotton balls with triple antibiotic and pack them in the straw to contain the mess. Just seal the end with pliers and a lighter. It works as an antibiotic for small cuts, scrapes and such as well as a fire starter.

If my photo bucket is acting right I'll see if I got some better pictures.

Got it from intense angler. He's one of my favorite you tub guys. He does a lot of helpful backpacking hints and day projects. I also made one of his little pot stoves. Its a nice back up.

It works but it has a bit of an unstable base and is not as consistent burn as I hoped but hey it was a fun build and nice light weight back up.

OK so I figured this thread could use a bump so what better way then to show off my little tin and what's inside. Also I'll apologize for my terrible spelling, typos and horrific grammar. Deal with it. :)

Now what's inside my tin is not perfect for others but suits my needs just fine. Keep in mind I live in an area saturated in rivers, ponds, swamps and creeks. So my kits tend to reflect what I'd see me using. This particular one is just a last resort type thing and is in no way how I leave prepared to do a week in the woods. This particular tin usually stays attached to one of my knives, if not it doesn't leave my pocket.

Here she is attached to my edc4, the screws at the top line up perfect however the bottom holes do not and it still needs to be tied off.

Sticking out of the top of the pouch is a readyman card with hooks, a small saw blade, an assortment of gig tips. You'll see a little more of that later on. The rest of the tin is just how I pack it all in, minus my triple antibiotic cotton balls in one of my above post. (I got irritated and used it to start a fire)

Here's an exploded view of the tin. I have a small frame lock Gerber, my cheapo swiss tech pliers, an antiseptic wipe, the readyman card, a trick birthday candle(the kind that don't blow out), a small fishing kit, some hooks with heads, a small bobber, and a small washer. I also usually carry the soaked cotton balls and two or three different colored pieces of paracord to make different jigs.

A better picture my cheapies. The pliers to me are a necessity. You don't wanna be that guy that gets a hook in his hand. So I keep these handy. I also carry a Gerber crucial. (Multi tool.)

A few shots of the emergency fishing kit, its the small container of floss you get free from the dentist. Inside of it I have approximately 25 yards or so of 20lbs braided spyderwire, in the orange tape there is 6-8 small hooks, ( remember kids its easier to catch a big fish on a small hook the it is to catch a small fish on a big hook), and some small weights.

Hope you enjoyed. Maybe someone else has something similar they keep with them all the time in the woods.

Great little kit TT!! You're right about pliers and hooks. I've got a leatherman in my little pack just for the pliers and wire cutter.

I got my Gerber crucial for the same reason. If I didn't sound all my money on knives I could get a nice leather man.

Nice! Thanks for all the details. And you're absolutely right, you need to pack a kit for YOUR needs.

I haven't really work out a nice little kit. I do have a survival kit consisting of some important items like flexi saw, candle, fishing line and hooks, mirror, firesteel, razor blade, whistle, cotton balls, and pencil but it is such a small pack and everything is so basic and few. I guess that's what you will need to survive a day but that's it. I am going to start doing something similar in a bigger pack, and now include a backup knife in there. How about a GSO 2.7, 3.5, or Necker 2?

Sounds like a good plan, pj. I'd think any of the 3 knives you listed would be fine for a back up, the 3.5 being the most versatile.

Yeah! I am eagerly awaiting my 4.1 but I haven't placed an order for the 3.5. Hopefully next month when I am not so strapped for cash.
