Well I managed to shut my hand in the car door last night. Its not broke or anything, just hurts alot.

This got me thinking. How many of us practice skills with an off hand? How confident are you that you could fare well with a broken hand or arm in a survival situation?

I kind of got the 1 handed ferro rod down, did alot of practicing last week.

It is a pia to fluff up tinder 1 handed though. As far as putting up a shelter, I would hope to find some natural shelter like a cave or down tree, that would make it easier. I dont see me making a swamp bed 1 handed. God forbid its my strong hand thats hurt, I might be a gonner.

Since my slice and dice incuident last week I've been doing everything in a modified way...It's a lot harder to whittle useful items without the use of you thumb..but it is certainly doable just takes a little more ingenuity. On a side note the stitches come out later this week Hooray.. J- hope you feel better bro, Sorry.

Oh sorry about your hand bro. If you have any blades that just don't feel right to you, you know where to send them. :D

Oh and since you slammed your own hand in the car door; I think this is deserved. DUMBASS! :p :D

Heal up quick dude.

Snagged mah Achilles heel there. I'm very right hand dominant. There's quite a few things that even with practice I can't get beyond doing in a very ghey way left handed.

Yeah, there was whiskey involved:o I was in the passenger seat with my arm out the window, and when my buddy got out he managed to shut all my fingers in the door. The worst part was tryin to explain to a hammered person to open the door. I was nice at first but after the third time, I was pretty uh, vocal about it....... So.... dumbass award for me for the day:o:thumbup:

Tony- we all know w/o your:jerkit:strong hand:jerkit: You would be in trouble.:D

I think I could fare ok with an injury like this, but some skills would be taxing thats for sure.

RR- glad to hear the lac is healin up good.

Actually bro, my 8 years of marriage has taught me to be efficient in that survival technique no matter which hand is used.:D

None the less, a god comeback:thumbup:

Hey JW, sorry to hear about your hand, Bro! Hope its better soon...

Tony, do they teach those skills youre refining after the 8 years at the WLC? :D

Seriously though, I was thinking on this very thing last week when I saw this:

http://www.twowolvesoutdoor.com/blastmatch.htm

Has anybody used these, or have any experience with it? This might help in a one handed situation if it worked and was reliable? :foot:

I havent used those, but I havnt heard any negative bout them. Looks like it could be very usefull!

BTW- Thanks Mike.

I have heard that the striker has the tendency to break on the blast match. Not sure though, I think Kevin has some experience with it. We went over a bunch of firestarting techniques lst week, its hard to remember all the pros and cons.

Yeah, alot of these tasks are hard enough with 2 hands. The added stress of injury, and the physical limitations associated with it are something I believe deserve attention.

Next time you guys are out practicing, think about that, and give some of them a shot, you might suprise yourself at what can be done with a little adaptation:thumbup:

i try to pactice using a knife with my offhand sometimes, but i think it would be screwed if i had to do a bow-drill with a broken hand.

great post J... sorry to hear about the hand...:o

i always consider the one handed possibilities, in a survival situation.... it's pretty darn hard, most folks don't realize it...

Thats true Mike, most people dont give it a thought untill they are injured and have no other choice but to adapt...

when i took my wilderness EMT class, some years back... we spent a whole day practicing being one handed... of course it always had to be our opposite hand that we use the most...:o it was an eye opener none the less for most folks...

Since last sept19th, I have gained infinate respect for amputees, I was involved in a yamaha rhino rollover accident which mangled my left arm. Severed tendons, fractured elbow, damaged nerves and severe lacerations! I am a right handed 6'1" 310 pound construction co. owner! Have always taken health for granted, 11 months and 3 surgeries later I am still in process. It is amazing how hard somethings are with one good and one bad! Never realized how much I rely on my left arm and the tasks that it was used for! Ther are days when the pain is at its worse that i wish it was gone, but the realization of using it lightly, after no use for 5-6 months of how much it means is realized! You can adapt but it is a severe change, I wish I could go back to carefree pre 9/19. But I am learning to get around the left arms deficiencys, Most people could make the transition especially in a survival situation, where there life hung upon the outcome, but it is hard, injury compounding ease of survival ten fold in my opion!
