Surviving injured.

like TonyM i have practiced fire starting with one hand, using my feet to brace the ferro rod while striking, and using my feet to brace any wood i might be cutting or shaving (fuzzsticks)

I have trained for this by having someone tie one hand behind my back and doing everything one handed. It's tough, especially when you can't use your dominate hand. Try this before it becomes necessary so you have some idea what to do if it really happens. This can help avoid panic which is the key to survival.

Because of shoulder damage, I am about half way there now. However that arm still works pretty well as long as I don't have to raise the arm above waist high.

Since last sept19th, I have gained infinate respect for amputees, I was involved in a yamaha rhino rollover accident which mangled my left arm. Severed tendons, fractured elbow, damaged nerves and severe lacerations! I am a right handed 6'1" 310 pound construction co. owner! Have always taken health for granted, 11 months and 3 surgeries later I am still in process. It is amazing how hard somethings are with one good and one bad! Never realized how much I rely on my left arm and the tasks that it was used for! Ther are days when the pain is at its worse that i wish it was gone, but the realization of using it lightly, after no use for 5-6 months of how much it means is realized! You can adapt but it is a severe change, I wish I could go back to carefree pre 9/19. But I am learning to get around the left arms deficiencys, Most people could make the transition especially in a survival situation, where there life hung upon the outcome, but it is hard, injury compounding ease of survival ten fold in my opion!

Thats a helluva a story man. I wish you the best of luck in your recovery, and rehab:thumbup:

Sorry to hear you got injured JW.

I've never practiced anything injured style. I saw that episode where Les did it for a while. But he eventually got frustrated and said screw it.

Thanks Andy, its actually feeling quite a bit better today....

I think ive seen that episode. The plane crash one. It might be on my DVD, I will have to watch it again.

Yeah, there was whiskey involved:o I was in the passenger seat with my arm out the window, and when my buddy got out he managed to shut all my fingers in the door. The worst part was tryin to explain to a hammered person to open the door. I was nice at first but after the third time, I was pretty uh, vocal about it....... So.... dumbass award for me for the day:o:thumbup:

With all due respect bro, and don't think I don't know about doing stupid things because of the 'demon rum', but I think the first dumbass award should be given for being in a car with a 'hammered person'. :thumbdn:

And before I come across as being 'holier than thou', I once lost my licence for a DUI. :o

JW, this place wouldn't be the same without you. :( Give your head a shake!

(with all the best intentions ) Doc

DOC, I wasnt driving and neither was he. He was in the back, I was passenger, and my wife was sober driver for the night.

I am a medic man. I pull dead people out of DUI wrecks all the time, and lost my cousin last spring to a drunkin 4wheeler wreck. That is something I DO NOT DO.

Reading my post, I really shouldve clarified that, I see it read bad. I really appriciate the kind intention and words in your post. It makes me feel good to know that you have my back, I would do the same for you anyday man.

Not to drift, but people listen to DOC, Dont risk your butt for a buzz, plan ahead. It pains me more than you will ever know to see some of the stupid mistakes I come across. I carry those ghosts with me as a reminder of how short life can be.

Practice that survival skill. Buckle up, and drink responsable....
