I saw him interviewed on the "Morning Show" the day after the episode aired, and that's exactly what happened. He was crouching down, tending to the fire, when the wind shifted, blowing smoke in his face. He quickly stood up to back away and passed out.
Did you notice there was a bit of foreshadowing in that episode? The guy burned himself twice before: he first grabbed a hot pan and then later stepped on a hot rock that bordered the fire pit.
It's a stupid and boring way to get hurt, but I'd guess that burning yourself on the campfire is probably the most common injury your everyday camper is likely to suffer in an outing.
