Survivorman: Australian Outback

I think he moves around to show more skills, and more of the environment.

Agreed, moving around makes for better TV.

Same for not killing the sheep, he either didn't have the time to show that sitaution had he whacked it over the head, or, discretion (as one of the shows producers) told him he might get viewer backlash.

The "outback" part of the title of this thread caught my attention. People, especially tourists, die out there all the time. It's a remote, dangerous place that requires a great deal of respect if you plan to start traveling around out there. I'm not convinced you are going to learn very much from a "survivor" TV entertainment show.

I always thought it'd be cool to have someone guide a group on an outback trip. Although I pictured being able to carry an Enfield along as well. . .

Les was well aware that, in a real survival situation, he should have stayed put as soon as he found food and water. He mentioned that "moving on" without purpose is one of the biggest mistakes people make when lost in the wild.

Oh my mistake, I hadn't actually seen the episode. Les continues not to disappoint with his knowledge.

They have organised tours for tourists, and if you listen to what the guide tells you, you will probably survive and have quite an interesting time. You won't be carrying any guns though.

There is some very very spectacular country out there.

I think Les left the first campsite to prove a point. He showed through demonstration and not just words that it is best to stay in one place. Someone will have seen the episode in question they will remember that Les wishes he would have stayed in one place and then they will stay in one place.

Did anyone else laugh out loud when he stuck the sheep pelvis up to his face? He must go slightly batty out there alone for a week at a stretch.

I think your reasoning is dead on, and I believe the idea worked.

Les was really concerned about your poisonous snake(...well poisonous everything!) population.

Oz does seem to have more than it's fair share of toxic creatures - snakes, spiders, centipedes, scorpions, wasps, green ants, stonefish, rays, sea wasps and other jellyfish..... not all are lethal and fatalaties relatively rare but who needs the pain? We had 2 recent Eastern Brown bites in this locale - one was only 3 blocks from the Town Centre. We get a few in my backyard from time to time. Had a Redbelly Black wander into the smoking area at the back of the medical centre at work last week - freaked out a couple of nurses - I told them it was a good reason to quit:p Don't mind having the odd Redbelly around - they hunt Eastern Browns

One thing is for sure. I will probably buy the entire series on DVD when it's offered. Yes, it's entertainment, but there's still a lot of good stuff.

I'm not sad to see it go. It is time, and Les is man enough to see that.

I dont understand. I have heard that it is illegal to own or carry a knife or gun in Australia. Am i wrong about that? Why in the world would any country make knives illegal?

Yeah - that cracked me up. He was right though, it looked like a cool mask.

I personally like Les better than Bear, but its interesting how people are willing to say its ok that Les does things that are not good survival because he is making his show more interesting, yet when Bear does stuff, we just insult him.
Les had made it perfectly clear that he intends to show a week of survival and that he's living out certain scenarios, like walking around or moving from place to place precisely to show how wrong it is.

He also says about a zillion times not to run around like a fool and not to take chances because even a twisted ankle in a survival situation could kill you... and not to take chances with mountain streams etc. He even mentions being extremely careful when attempting to break a fallen log or knap a rock. He's never said not to ride down a huge mountain on a homemade luge or rappel with grapevines down a 100 foot cliff, but I guess it just hasn't come up yet. :)

Les actually does his skill shots also. No gasoline (unless noted) or power drills involved in starting fires etc.

The bottom line is one guy says to drink your own piss and drink the fluid from animal dung and the other doesn't. The choice is pretty easy, really.

Seasons 1 and 2 are on DVD, which you may know.

I really enjoyed seasons 1 & 2 but so far, season 3 is a big let down. You can tell he's getting bored with the whole thing now, and as others have stated it's probably best to quit on a high note.

I'll look forward to Les' next project.

Not illegal. Guns are controlled through licensing (I assume some types of guns are completely banned). Some type of knives are illegal in some states (typically things like AO, balisong etc), and you must have a valid reason for carrying one (self defense or "I might need it" aren't valid, food prep and work necessity most likely would be) but you're hardly going to run into a ranger out there and be asked why you're carrying a knife.

I'd been hoping he'd do an episode here but this season, his heart's just not in it.

Anyone ever heard that snakes won't cross a rope thing? Think the local guide might've been having him on.

I've never heard it, but I saw a snake cross a rope before. Of course, it wasn't while I was sleeping inside of it, but..

I just wish in one of his shows he went out with an actual complete kit of somesort. It would show what to do with some of the items. Some people have the kits, but have never seen them in actual use. If they never use them, or at the VERY least saw them used, how will THEY know HOW to use them?

I guess it is too late now..
