Survivorman: Australian Outback

I dont understand. I have heard that it is illegal to own or carry a knife or gun in Australia. Am i wrong about that? Why in the world would any country make knives illegal?

We inherited the British mentality - you Yanks had the sense to boot them out. Guns can be owned but the situation is over-regulated and inconsistent. eg you can own a SemiA shotgun but not a PumpA shotgun - with rifles it's the opposite????

Certain knife types are banned in Oz and in Vic you need a license to own a sword. Public carry is regulated - you will probably get away with going down to the mall with an LM or SAK but not with a BM710.

No restrictions on knife carry on private land and fairly tolerant on most public land/forest but you will be asking for trouble if you are found with a machete or large bowie in a National Park - particulary the more popular ones as conservation is taken very seriously here. (I once got ticked off by a ranger for picking up a small log - I was studying entomology at the time and was curious what bugs were under it).

Anyone know which region of Oz this episode was filmed in?

At one point in the program they stated that Les was in "Southwest Australia" and showed a map with an arrow. If this episode shows up on youtube you can take a look.

Man, I am glad I dont live in Australia or Britain. Regulating guns is one thing, but knives? Oh come on. Anyway the first season of Survivorman was the best to me, by far. I can see were Les is getting tired of doing it but I still hate to see him go. I loved that show and that is a rare thing for me now a days. You can tell he really cares about his craft. Were gonna miss you Les.

I liked the show, and I wasnt aware that he "hide his fixed blade" on this or any show. But honestly, this show, and the whole season seems like Les is burnt out, ready to move onto new things.

I'll check it out - I live in the South West, on the coast, but there aren't many parts of Oz that I haven't adventured (except for FNQ - Far North Queensland). I'll report back once I've seen it with any local insites.....

.....I just saw the preview and if he's in West Oz it looks like the Mulga country, somewhere out near the rabbit proof fence. Tough place to find water in Summer - But a fairly easy place to navigate in. Still - not exactly a remote location and pretty close to main highways and farms (hence the dead sheep). Farm animals are a good sign because none of them could exist more than a few k's away from an artificial water source like a bore or dam.

Sounds to me like it was probably somewhere slightly off the beaten track but not dangerous or too uncomfortable, don't want the camera crews getting upset. :)

I reckon they should give him a video camera, some basic survival supplies and drop him in the middle of the Simpson Desert. Video should be pretty entertaining if he makes it out. :D
