Survivors: other knives you like

My most frequently carried blade since I've had it, right out front :)

I have a lot of fun with the Bucks, Barkies and Busses too. The GSOs certainly stack up well.

and since we are sharing photos.. here is a treat for ya.. a prototype I worked on..

Cool!! is the the OshKosh?

Looks like it may have a blind spot or two... ...but I guess you can just run over anything that gets in your way.

I sure like the looks of that small Laconico blade. I always did drool when I would google 'kephart' and see one of Ray's on bladeforums. Nice bunch of steel there man.

Thank you, sir. That knife definitely gives the 3.5 a run for the money, if it was in 3v rather than O1... ? :D

It's a touch longer so it fits my hand a wee better, but for hairier situations the grind and steel of the 3.5 handily wins out. I have a 4.1 on the way and I think that'll be the one. Looks like it'll combine the aspects of what I love about the other two resulting in a perfect harmony.

The new 4.1 looks like it will be hard to beat. I like how Guy added some handle length to it and the 3.5 for these new runs.

In fixed blades, I usually look at three knife companies. Survive, Busse and LT Wright. I do find myself lusting after a a Fiddleback Forge though. My go to folders preferences are all over the map but Hinderer, Zt,Benchmade and GEC are my favs

IMO, it looks like Benchmade really stepped up their game for 2016.. They are changing from FRN and cpm154 to G10 and S30V in their folders.. and they are also going to a "through design" ditching the full length spacers that trap dirt.. Thier prices have reflected this also as in some case literally doubling in price.

Bussee, and Swamp rats (poor man's bussee).. look nice, but just not a fan of powdercoats and r crinkle powerdcoats. I much prefer no coating or the fine texture cerakote on Survive.

I keep a set of Bark Rivers around because I like a convex edge for certain tasks.. Barkies are semi custom- hand made.. but the overbuilt thickness that tapers down to with a full grind convex does make a bit leary of edge strenght.. though iv never had an issue..

Survive are in a category of their own.. You don't have 10 different guys sharpening.. you have one guy who is an OCD perfectionist.. This causes long lead times, but also makes SK what they are.. without that level of OCD I don't think SK would be what it is..

s!k for fixed blades, pretty telling that they make the only ones i own. as for folders, i enjoy many different brands with zt taking the edge. i am very partial to wharnecliffe/reverse tanto/modified drop point type blades for some aesthetic reason.

You guys know my favorite folders from the Survivors Folders thread...

This is my most recent purchace...

Busse Team Gemini Mini. Its a brute. About the same length as my 5.1 but built like a damn tank. Its more of a fighter and splitter than the 5.1

I am currently modding it. I contoured the handles, stripped the guard and blade and I am debating removing the handles, stripping the realst of the knife and then sandblasting it. I also have a tanker gray version that is not getting stripped. Once I am done modding, I will make a sheath. Here is its current form...

I also have an adventure sworn explorer and the other stuff I have is all neck knives.

Also two Tops Prather War Bowies. One I modded...

Nope! Thats exactly how it looked underneath. There are more pics in the busse subforum.

For starters... The 5.1 has a way better sheath!!!! LOL

The TGM is 1/4 inch thick and has a thick grind. The 5.1 is magnitudes sharper from the factory. The TGM is significantly more heavy. The handle is actually very comfortable (I modded mine though).

I havent done any head to head tests but I hypothesize that the TGM would only be better when battening, prying, chopping and forcefully thrusting (only because the guard would prevent forward slipping of the hand). These all would be factors of the increased mass of the knife.

For true usefulness the TGM isnt bad, but the 5.1 is designed to CUT and carve while being sturdy enough to actually handle splitting duties. The TGM is designed as a shortened version of a heavy duty SHTF fighting survival knife. I would be happy with either knife if I could have only one. The TGM would be way better if the used 3/16 stock and not 1/4.

The 5.1 is still and probably will always be my favorite woods/survival/utility knife.

If I was going to war ide choose the TGM. Any other activity would be the 5.1

Oh yeah forgot to add the TGM was $360 after shipping and without a sheath. This just underscores the value of S!K products. $225 for a superior cutting tool with a sick sheath.

I have a bunch of other knives and almost all of them are from AA Forge, Fiddleback and Adventure Sworn. All three are great little companies that not only craft awesome knives but also provide great customer service... just like Survive!

pardon the terrible picture:

Per recent promise, here are some photos of the LT Wright Overland machete, the "NTM": Carothers Light Chopper and the GSO 4.7 which all were delivered this week. These are just glamor shots and I will be posting actual shots with utility in the upcoming weeks:
